    INFP - The Idealists

The one I am the most uncertain about is Marianne being a I or E. She is very outgoing and outspoken sometimes, but at other times at the big gatherings she mostly care to talk with whom she is comfortable with and is fine by being alone. But I can definitely seeing her as an E.

Yeah, I'm not sure on her. I would either guess ENFP or ISFP, with lots of idealistic Fi. And definitely an enneagram type 4. I don't know why I don't think of her as an INFP though... maybe because she doesn't seem to have any Si.

    ESFP - The Performers

Jane Austen is an INTJ with well-developed Fi.

    INTP - The Thinkers

It's been a long time since I've read Pride and Prejudice, and my wife having the Keira Knightly version on near-permanent repeat for like, a year, probably taking it's toll.

I'll say first that I think ENFJ is the better typing for Elizabeth (though Knightly plays her ENFP).

Also, I don't think I am getting INFP for Jane... she seems much more likely an ISFJ. Why INFP? I ask a similar question for Bingley... why Ne dom?

I don't remember Mr. Bennet from the book as well, but IxTP from the miniseries/film... INTP when Donald Sutherland played him - for sure.

For Sense and Sensibility, can I recommend ISFP for Marianne?

Not sure on Jane Austen herself. I know that INTJ is the typical typing, but I think INFJ is just as if not more likely. I think Charlotte Bronte was also an INFJ, and I think the severity of INFJ in that culture is underestimated. I come from a very conservative region, and I've seen some INFJs in a 'high society' setting with a strongly conservative/religious background be of a particularly unyielding demeanor. I think her writing indicates Ni/Fe more than Ni/Fi. Just a thought.

    ISTP - The Mechanics

I'm curious to understand why people see Austen as an INTJ--having been a fan of her novels for years and having just read a collection of her letters, I'm not so convinced of that. Her letters reveal someone who was very much aware of the social atmosphere of the neighborhood in which she lived--anecdotes about people, what they did and what they said and wore, etc. She's fairly critical of them, but I'd say you could make a good case for Fe in there, sure. Fe doesn't have to be all nicey-nicey all the time; in fact, strong Fe can be sometimes harsh in its appraisal of how people "should" behave or be (look at Caroline Bingley from Pride and Prejudice).

    As for her characters:
Pride and Prejudice (basing this on the book. I've just seen a pretty awful stage play of this one, so it's on my mind):
Elizabeth Bennet: definitely Fi there. But I think she's more ESFP, not ENFP as most people say. I can't explain it, but I just don't see Ne there.
    Darcy: gets INTJ'd a lot.
Mrs. Bennet: ESFJ with beyond annoying Ne.
Mr. Bennet: ISTP with strong Ni.
    Jane: ISFJ
Mary: ISTJ with well-developed middle child syndrome
    Kitty: ISFP
    Lydia: ESFP
Mr. Bingley: ESFJ--so much Fe there.
    Caroline Bingley: ESFJ
    Mr. Wickham: ESFP
Mr. Collins: no idea. The actor who played him in the BBC miniseries was superbly smarmy, as the character should be.
    Lady Catherine: ESTJ
    Charlotte Lucas: IxFJ
    Georgiana Darcy: IFP, possibly S
    Mrs. Gardiner: INFJ

It's been a while since I've read Austen's other books, so I don't really know about them...

    Jane Austen - INTJ

    Sense and Sensibility

Marianne Dashwood - ENFP (Elinor would like Marianne to be introverted which is why she constantly reprimands her for her lack of reserve throughout the book. During the time in which this novel was written extroversion was not well regarded by society which is why Marianne’s demonstrative behavior is thought to be in need of correction.)
    Elinor Dashwood - INTJ
    Edward Ferrars - IXFP
    John Willoughby - ESXP
    Sir John - ESXP
    Mrs. Palmer - ESFP
    Mr. Palmer - INTJ

    Pride and Prejudice

    Elizabeth Bennet - ENXX
    Jane Bennet- IXFP
    Charlotte Lucas - ISTX
    Mr. Darcy - INTJ
    Mr. Bingley - ESFP

    Mrs. Bennet - ESFJ
    Mr. Bennet - INTP

    Emma

    Emma: ENTJ
    Harriet: ISFP
