Why are medical shows really popular?

I mean if you look at the history of medical shows, it seems that people are drawn into the drama of what goes in the hospitals. There are so many medical shows that have aired and been successful in ratings such as

    E.R.
    Grace Anatomy
    Scrubs
    House

    and etc...

Whats with these medical shows that make them popular? Are there a lot of nurses and doctors that watch this and go "hey! I should try that method out on my patients!" lol.

Personally, I only watch Scrubs and Nip / Tuck.
Sscrubs because I like the deep meanings in every episode (JD), along with the high sarcasm (Cox) and just the randomness (Janitor). They talk about stuff that I can identify with. Real problems.

Nip / Tuck because I enjoy the high rate of happenings (much of that stuff are *real problems* again) and also because I am highly interested in medicine. I guess Nip / Tuck is a bit more serious about that topic than Scrubs. At least in my eyes.

As for people, I think they enjoy those shows because it is a mix of *real problems* (mostly between the characters) and it is about health. And people do care about their health. At least about sicknesses. People seem to do a lot of self-diagnosis nowaways, so those shows are quite popular. My theory.

I guess it also helps people to deal with this whole stuff better. Health and Death are serious things, so if there is a show that can *educate* you about those things in an interesting, painless, funny way, people are more likely to take it. Because fact is, people ARE curious about Health and Death, but to just look it up like that might be unpleasant for some of them, so they stick to humor and randomness.

Like most dramas, probably because it's real life, amplified.

    PLUS: Blood, sex, and needles.

I'm guessing its because the events in the shows are usually engaging and the fact that it's close to reality makes it even more.

I think it is our need to be at the center of attention.
    A person in a hospital.
Every one is paying attention to you because you have had a crisis and you are in need of everyones attention.
It is also our curiously of the life of someone who has been trained to save ones life.
And how does that person lead their life.

I watch House and that's about it. I watch House for Dr. House and his personality. He's got The Juice and mojo. He's interesting to me.

I think there are so many nursing/doctor/hospital shows and crime dramas because society, isn't very healthy. They are a reflection of a society that's "sick" or "dead".
