I was really curious to try and see how the types would perceive something through their cognitive functions, like if how would all 8 functions describe one picture. Something like that.
Like for example, how would the 8 cognitive functions each describe "The scream" by Edvard Munch ?
They do not do this only Thinking and Feeling would ultimately have a say. Sensation and Intuition work outside of what your mind can articulate into words. We can speculate on what particular types might have to say but the way Sensation and Intuition work means that they do not describe anything they only perceive it.
For example you could say Sensation says "it is a painting of The Scream" but Sensation perceives it, Thinking actually defines what it is. This same argument can be applied to practically everything that you could suggest is something Sensation might say. The way Sensation works might be that it sees the picture and then as soon as interest is lost in the picture it looks around for other things to observe that are more interesting. This applies for both attitudes of Sensation.
Intuition works in the same way although it sees immaterial information in its minds eye and observes that more than the actual literal picture of "The Scream". As soon as interest is lost in what the picture has to offer intuition, intuition also looks around for other things that produce more interesting things to perceive.
Last night I was watching a friend play some songs at an open mic night and perceived a mental image in my head of my doctor sliding around a large open office. He slid over to me and started to crack my knuckles and he cracked my thumb joints in unnatural ways and told me it has been a very long time since these have been cracked. He and the office then faded away and I was perceiving my friend as a kind of yeti-like figure covered in ice with snow as far as I could see. This was not a dream or a daydream it was just what I was seeing while my friend was playing some songs. I interpreted this to mean my friend has a cold and if I am not careful I will get one too. I think the thumb cracking was related to preventing a cold in some way because I just kind of knew it had something to do with my throat (I do not know how).
Articulating the intuitive perception as I did above is still not really you seeing my intuition. You would be reading what my Thinking could make sense of. You can not actually "see" my intuition in all of it's detailed, colorful and vibrant glory and you can not feel the same things I was feeling including that sense of knowing what the intuition was about. In other words I can not say anything from my intuitions point of view. My intuition is perceived by me. I can communicate what I see or saw but it will not say much in relation to how my intuition might "describe" perceiving anything. This is only my opinion. I am sure somebody will soon start typing up "Ne says A, Ni says B, Se says C, Si says D" if only it was that simple.
This is actually the type of explanation I was looking for, something in-depth, I just didn't know how to phrase my thoughts correctly. Thank you for your answer, it was helpful c:
Yeah you're right, I think I was more curious to know how a single image could be interpreted by different functions as in how would the users of these functions actually describe it, like what would stand out to them, how do they see it, how would they interpret it, what would they think of, you know what I mean ? I think I worded it wrong, sorry c: I wanted to get an idea of how they worked in general, how they'd make their user see the world and interpret things, since each person sees things differently. It's not just about the painting, I meant as in anything, the painting was more of an example.
I'm not trying to be difficult, but I always thought he was covering his ears because someone else was screaming. Apparently the subject is the one that is supposed to be screaming? I don't know whether or not this says anything about my cognitive functions or not. I really like Dissy's post and can't really say anything better than that.
I don't think you can look at the functions individually. It is how they interact that matters. Just like we don't rely on just one sense to interpret our environment, we don't use just one cognitive function to create a mental construct, judge it, give it meaning, and ultimately, understand it.
F - by its value (internal, subjective or external, objective)
T - by its truth (internal, subjective or external , objective)
S - by its Qualities (internal subjective secondary qualities or external, objective Primary qualities)
N - by what it symbolises or implies (from one's internal subjective symbolic map or from one's external objective symbolic map)
Ne wants to do 1000 things with, eventually turning it into something completely foreign.
Ni uses it to predict the future.
Si was proud to see it on Antiques Roadshow.
Se likes the colours, shape, smell, texture, and flavour of it, even though you're not meant to put it in your mouth.
Ti will blow it up in their garage, because they see that it serves no practical purpose.
Te will use it to control the peasants.
Fi felt happy about it, then sad, then hap...
Fe is glad it's a cooking tray, because they have guests coming around for brunch, lunch, linner, dinner...
