Anyone else having trouble getting work?

Being made redundant sucks. It's a bit different from getting fired. When you get fired it's usually because you weren't performing well or you were not doing something right etc. Anyway, I got made redundant because the company I worked for wasn't making enough money and they couldn't afford to pay me.

Now it's really hard to find another (paid) job. I've applied to so many places but haven't been successful, it's so frustrating. And it's not like I have zero experience in anything, I've done work experience before, plus my previous job that I had for 4 years, and I currently volunteer 3 days a week just for something to do and to gain more experience.

It's not only me though, the economy absolutely sucks and it's hard for a lot of people my age to find a job. I knew one guy in his 40's with loads of experience, wonderful resume, still wasn't successful. I also notice not many companies want to train new staff anymore either it's like, "must have 30 years experience even though you're 25 years old" type thing. This is in Australia. Our problem is we built soooo many shopping centres and retail outlets but we have hardly any infrastructure or factories where we actually make our own products like steel for example. The country just can't run on clothes and food stores.

Oh, there are a shortage of nurses but I know that is just not for me, I don't have the patience for that and I don't like seeing anything 'gory' even stitching a wound. Plus a lot of nurses get abused and their management doesn't care, which is very wrong.

Anyone else finding it difficult where you live?

I've applied online, have handed in my resume on person, have gone into shops saying if they have work, have talked to staff and managers about positions, a lot of them say, "Just apply online", "But I did", "Then apply online again". Also said I'm willing to do training and courses if I need to.

    Absolutely nothing.

Sorry to hear that! I’ve been fortunate to not have difficulty switching to a new job/business last year, but it’s been difficult for others I’ve seen and heard too. It’s a different economic environment than years ago, and the jobs are lower benefits, higher volatility, where loyalty seems almost punishable than rewarded now. I hope you find something soon!

Thank you for your kind words! I'm thinking of studying IT because I just seem to be good with computers. (Even though it's kind of boring...ehh I need to earn some decent money somehow.) I didn't want to go on government money but now I am, because my parents don't have much money because they're both very ill can't work so I have to help them out. (Of course!) Give them board (which is normal and fine!) help with bills etc, my other sibling too but he works. Sigh I hate relying on government money but I'm volunteering and trying to find a job so I guess I'm not one of those people that does nothing. I just feel like I don't deserve it, I like working hard for my money.
I'll just keep trying. I might ask a few places if they're willing to take me on for work experience as well.

do you have any friends that might be able to help you find a job? not sure what kind of job you are looking for... besides that the best luck i've had finding jobs was through the newspaper. might be an outdated mode.

I have one who may be able to help. A lot of my friends also can't find jobs. I've tried the newspaper but not this week's one.

Sorry to read about your parents health. Government money is there for times like this, no shame to utilize a government program as intended. IT would be a great field.

Idk--it seemed like there was sort of a workers market for a short time, and now it feels like its back to the employers market again. But what do I know? There's not a ton of people scrambling for my job though, I'm pretty sure.

One thing that I find helped me when I was younger was trying to meet with the boss or manager before--like not just dropping off a resume or an application, but going in, shaking hands, introducing myself. I think it helped them to see a person was attached to the paperwork. I know you can't do this with every place, but I tend to think that it's better.

I might ask 'can I give the application/resume to them myself?' when I'm turning it in. Idk if it's electronic now, maybe you could shoot them a friendly e-mail too.

Edit: Oh--I see you do that. I don't go in after applying, but before applying. It can seem creepy to some employers if you keep coming back after applying (I've seen my employer's reaction to people who do this).

Yeah people don't want to hire me. They would rather hire an immigrant and let me starve. USA USA USA USA

Just finished three years of college and am looking for work. But I've only been applying for a couple of weeks. Just have to wait and see what happens I guess.
