    Would you rather work 4 hours/week at $40k/year or 80 hours/week at $400k/year?

Okay, let's say that you can have a business or possibly even career where you could:

    1) Make $40,000 a year and work only 4 hours a week.

    2) Make $400,000 a year, but you would have to put in about 80 hours or work a week.

I don't want to get into whether or not its hypothetically possible, we can save that for another thread.

I want to know which you would pick.

    additional details:

Option 1 carries the risk that it might not be sustainable for longer than 6-7 years. Option 2 allows you to quit after X number of years where you have a comfortable net worth and can retire or do whatever you want after.

Basically it comes down to, would you hustle to make the most income possible to put yourself in a better position later, or do what gives you enough free time to enjoy the moment while you're young?

    What are your thoughts?

Does option 2 come with complimentary adderall and/or cocaine? If so, I think I could physically work those hours.

I take the $400K/year job and clandestinely sub-contract half the work to desperate/unscrupulous people who are open to a discount and really need the reference.

Option 2! Only because I worked worse hours for my degree last year and not only survived, but enjoyed having something to do all day every day. I'd also like to be able to retire early and travel a lot.

Work for a few years, invest most of it, then WHABAM! I get to retire young and pursue all those poorly paid odd jobs I've been dying to try.

This depends on what the different jobs are, at least to me.

Assuming I like both jobs, and I didn't have any hobbies that required lots of time:

I'd start with what @zeep said, 80 hour weeks aren't as bad as they sound. I did that in the navy for six years, for a lot less money. Besides being too busy to be unhappy, it's a lot easier to save money.

Then again, 400K isn't as big a number as it sounds, and you'd be surprised how quickly your expenses grow to match your income. 40K forces a lot of economizing, so life is actually less complicated.

Still, I'd like the option of quitting when I feel good about it, so I'd go with the big number.

I'd go with nr 1 (assuming that I don't like the job). Imho going with nr 2 would make your expenses grow a lot, so i highly doubt the 'invest and retire' option is possible (i've seen people double their income and the difference wasn't noticeable, but maybe they we're not nt's...).
Also I can live for 750$ (not living in the US) so I could start some crazy business, have loads of time and enough money to live. Win-win.
