Your principles and Home Owners Associations?

I'm just wondering what anyone thinks about HOAs. Are they a violation of individual freedoms of property and living or can they be artistic archetypes? Are they necessary to you? Do they violate your principles of harmony? You really don't care either way? What do you think of them? Would you buy a house in a neighborhood with one or keep looking soley because it has one or do you not care one way or another?

Just curious. My girlfriend and I had a fight about them and she accused me of being "black and white" on the matter, which could be true, but I still hold my stance. I would like to hear your stance for the purpose of me trying to possibly gain a little more perspective.

I say if you don't like them, don't live where there is one. HOAs exist only because neighborhoods want them there. They only enforce rules set by resident governing boards. Although there can be vindictive a-holes working for HOAs, just as there are a-holes working for other companies.
I would probably not live where there is an HOA, unless I was wealthy enough to pay for a landscaping service.
