So this is probably a better place to ask than most. I'm curious as to where the lines between personality traits, personality disorders, and mental illnesses lie. It seems like I have a lot of the traits that are exhibited in antisocial personality disorders (sociopaths), schizoid personality disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder as would be exhibited by a manic personality (although I am devoid of any kind of depressive disorder, in fact I suspect I may be hyperthymic). I don't suffer from any of those disorders though, I just find it easy to understand them as I have a lot of personality traits in common with those disorders to the point that I sometime almost push the boundaries. Pretty much everyone has some disorder that they are pushing the boundaries on (some people more than others), but not to the point that they're actually crazy. It's all part of being human really. Where exactly is that line though that separates an acceptable personality trait from an unhealthy disorder? Can a personality disorder ever really be acceptable? If so, which ones and how? Is it ever possible to have a mental illness and not suffer from it? For instance if you commonly have hallucinations (visual as well as audible) that are just natural and not substance induced, but can tell them apart from reality how would that fall psychologically crazy scale? Any thoughts would be appreciated.
