What is the first major worldwide event you remember?

I got inspired by the same question in the Generation Z section.

----

Apparently I didn't pay much attention to international events in my early childhood (no memories of the Croatian War of Independence). Here are the earliest I remember:

FIFA world cup 1994
Hail Bopp comet 1997
Kosovo war 1998

Fall of the Berlin Wall, Yeltsin standing on his tank and the conflict in the former Yugoslavia.

I was VERY young when some of these things happened (Born 1986) but I absorbed it purely because of the reverence my grandfather held the news in. We were very close and you notice stuff like that. It gave a sense that whatever all this means, it must be very important - he had a voracious appetite for world events and news which I now hold as an adult.

I was born in 91 so I think the first thing I really remember that was pretty huge world wide was Britney Spears debut in 98 ;) lol jk

I'd probably say either Y2K or 9/11.

Challenger Ship explosion. It really disturbed me.

I remember being really excited when the Berlin Wall fell, even though the politics around it were above my head. I just saw everyone partying on TV and my dad was happy and stuff. A part of the wall went on tour and we went to see it.

I remember 2000 better than anything previous to it. And the Olympics I think but I remember it better with phelps than I do in 2004. I remember 2001 nba finals that was the first finals I watched. 9/11 and George bush getting elected and how long that took and my mom praying he'd get elected. I remember the beginning of both wars and especially how much my mom complained about the Iraq war. I remember more when I was older than like 6/7 which is mostly what I'm reffering to like George bush's second term and election. And the madrid attacks etc...

Her death was a huge thing. They even aired her funeral at the Skydome (a sports stadium) My biggest memory of it was how it was all over the TV, which was annoying to me.

I don't know if this counts as a worldwide event, but I remember the Monica Lewinski–Bill Clinton incident, (though I was just a kid and didn't know exactly what was going on).

My mom and her friend were talking about it, and how they couldn't believe it/how disappointed they were. When I asked them what Bill Clinton did wrong, they had a clever response, "He showed a girl in the government something important that he shouldn't have showed to her, and then he lied to the public about it."

I didn't know what sex was yet, so they didn't want to talk about that, but they weren't wrong in what they told me!

Props to my mom and her friend for their amazing answer to a young boy's question.

*Edit @ErinO I totally forgot about that, but yes, I remember that very well. It was a big deal, and I remember Diana, the purple Beanie-Baby bear with a white embroidered rose that was released in her memory.

@Westy365 - I was in middle school when that happened, and my thoughts were "why is getting head such a big deal?" and "lots of people cheat". Obviously, this was quite shocking to the adults (mostly conservative, church going types) around me, and they thought I just didn't understand because I was a kid... ha!
