My question is whether someone born in the late 90s (September 1996-1999) would better relate to someone born in the late 80s (September 1986-1989) or to the late 2000s (September 2006-2009)? As someone born in May 1997, I feel like I would relate better to those born in December 1989 than someone born in September 2006, also considering the age difference would be two years less that way as well, but aside from that, experience wise, I feel like we were the last to remember a world without digital technology being used as a norm unlike those in 2006. What do you guys think?

Well, I know this isn't the time range you're asking for, but I'll say it anyway.

I was born in '95 and I can relate to my siblings who were born in '89 and '90 in some aspects, but in others I can't.
I can also relate in some aspects to people born in say '99. But usually, yeah more relatable to people who are closer to my age obviously, like 1-3 years difference.

But if you want the different generations, my relatable stuff is a mixture of late 80's babies to '99 born.

Oh, basically, I can't fully relate to either one, only a bit on both sides. I think being born close to smack middle of the 90's is a thing of its own. We grew up with VHS but we used computers from an early age (around age 6), unlike 80's babies, who's first time using a computer they would have been a little older.

Kids born 2000 and later, I don't really know, not really friends with anyone that age. Well, apart from two work colleagues. And apart from two girls I used to babysit, but that's different.

I have a cousin born around 1987. I only started hanging around him when he was in his late 20s and when I was a teenager. He said he liked Dragon Ball Z and Slipknot growing up and I did too so there doesn't seem to be that much of a difference pop culturally. I don't know anyone born in the late 2000s. The youngest person I know personally was born in early 2003 and there's already a considerable pop culture gap between us.

Overall,

Somonne born in 1987 vaguely remembers pre-internet world, vividly remembers pre social media world
Someone born in 1997 doesn't remember pre internet world, vaguely remembers pre social media world
Someone born in 2007 remembers neither

I don't see what I would have in common with someone born in 2007. There's a considerable difference between me and someone born in 1987 but I think the difference between me and someone born in 2007 is even bigger.

It depends how you define a pre-internet world. If pre-internet world is a world in which people didnt have internet access at home, 1987 wouldnt be able to remember a pre-internet world even, as in the early 80s, a small percentage of people in the world had usenet and telnet at home, which was similiar to the web, but without viral videos, social media, and online gaming. Now, if we are referring to a pre-internet world as world before having internet at home became common in developed countries, then, we can say 1987 can vividly remember a time before a pre-internet world and 1997 can vaguely remember a pre-internet world even if both could not remember a time before their households having internet access. Both 1987 and 2007 born are different from us in their own ways. However, in terms of experiences, when having a percentage scale in which 100 is the same number as 1987 and 0 is the same number as 2007, I would say my percentage is more than 50, though I wouldnt say close to 100.

I was born in 1992 and I have observed that I use social media quite differently from family and friends/colleagues who were born in the 1980s and quite similarly to family and friends/colleagues who were born in the mid-/late- 90s. Different syntax, different use/understanding of emojis/GIFs etc.

I was born in 1998. I think it depends on wether or not your parents where in time with the internet and all this.
I had only a computer that I was really allowed to use in 2008. So I related better with some aspect of people older than me. But I was raised in an environment that was still the 2000's in term of culture (music, and TV shows) but even there I was a book lover in my early years too so I was into some disney (Lion King, Pochontas, Mulan and Cinderella and vividly afraid by Dumbo), and both Totally Spies and Princess Sissi. I played a lot outside, and I think I am really greatful towards my parents for that, I think it's sad how 2000 kids mostly grew up... So that way too I think I embrace more what might be close to a 80's childhood. I started on facebook had no my space or else, I was like 14 or 15 so there too I was a bit late and had only a couple of MSN chatting with a friend through my older brother account....

I'd consider myself on the cusp, being born in 1995. Definitions of course vary, and most places at this point place me in Generation Y, but I always feel a tug in both directions. I grew up with people my age and older for the most part - almost exclusively people born in the 90s like me. As I've gotten older that range has only gotten larger, and now in my mid 20s I'm finding myself being able to relate to my 14 year old brother about as well as my friends who are in their 30s. I think that's a huge benefit when I think about it. We can kind of be in 2 worlds at once.

So to answer your question more succinctly, on a deeper level I can relate more to someone who was born in the late 80s than someone who was born in the late 2000s, but I think time will really tell considering one of these age groups is out there in the world and one is mostly still in middle school and high school.

Edited to add: lately I've been thinking that based on the way I grew up and the people I naturally befriend, I am a millennial. C:

I was born in 1998 and relate to both equally.
During the beginning of my childhood (early memories-10 years old) I mostly played with my aunts and uncles. Specifically those who were born between 1988-1992. When my cousins were born, I continued my childhood with them. They were born between 2004-2008. It first started as me babysitting them, but we're more like a squad now. Thank god I look slightly younger than my age and kinda blend with them (or i would've felt too old and insecure being around them hahaha!).
Oh and my aunts? We're a squad too~
I find different generations fascinating, and I enjoy being around both.

In general, these are three different generations between which there is a noticeable gap, you’re all very different with different experiences, therefore, in most cases, late 90s babies have little in common with both late 80s and late 2000s babies, cause the difference between you is a whole decade. And obviously you’re more relate with mid 90s and early 2000s babies because you have the smallest age gap and the most similar experiences. Ofc everything depends on the person himself, it’s easier for someone to contact older people, someone with younger ones, but I think today it should be a little easier for late 90s babies to contact the late 80s than late 2000s babies, since you are both adults, many some of you work and may be colleagues, some of you have children and you have common ground, while the late 2000s babies are still younger and middle teens and study in school, so they have little in common with adults and you have very different interests, but over time this gap will dissipate when they become adults. I have two sisters who were born in 2000 and 2006, even they’re not really relate to each other, since one of them is already an adult (21), and the second is still a teenager (15), they have very different interests and outlooks on life, what can we say about those born in 1996 (25) and 2009 (13) for example? Nothing in common between them now.
