Ok...I got my father to fill out an online Meyer Briggs test....

He turns out to be an ESFP according to that

    but here's the rub:

The only thing which is in certainty is the E at 95%

    the others??

    S 53%

    F 53%

    P 53%

Are there any ways I can glean an insight into this enigma?

humanmetrics.com right? This tested me incorrectly, many times.

personality info. I believe everything he answered was honest and not marred by any self bullshit....I did it for him over the phone.

But....geeeez! Why does it have to be so close??

I guess he does sort of act like an entertainer but there is a darker, brittle and critical side to him which hovered over me as a child.....I may be somewhat skewed in my perception of him...hahaha

    Try discussing the basic questions:

    - wide circle of acquintances vs few good friends
    - future vs present time
    - issues vs people
    - plans and deadlines vs spontaneity

You should be able to make a somewhat ok guess about at least some of these. How did he behave if you got up late? Is he always in time? Does he get stressed if things don't happen when they're planned? How did he solve children's fights? Does he already have plans for retirement? Etc.

he has a wider circle of acquaintances
he is more in the present
    he focuses more on people
    he is more spontaneous

he was a control freak when I was growing up....really quite mean too...Tall man with a look that could make anyone quiver....except maybe me...I was a defiant shit...LOL But he was always amicable around most others unless they were under his control.
he was always on time....early in fact...I hated that when I was at a party, he would come in and sing and chat and cuddle me in public and *shudder* say how pretty I was and wasn't it a pity I was so prickly.

He would solve our fights by giving us such long lectures that we forgot what the hell we were fighting about.
He is retired....he had no plans for that.

    geez...maybe I need therapy...LOL

    That spells ESFP.

Moving this to a more appropriate section, if you please.

One thing that may also help you is to look at the 'Personal Growth' page for ESFP, or any other type you think he could be, on Personalitypage.com. Rarely are people as positive as the descriptions seem to project, so it's always a good idea to see how the types can grow to get an idea of how they are under stress or what they miss on improving. Your father seems a bit like an ESFP, from what you've described, but I can't really be the judge of that.

Thanks for the replies. They were helpful. I had the dilemma of my best friend having this type and my father this type. They seem so different. After looking at the personal growth page I can see why. My friend actually went through a small phase of behaving similarly to the darker side of this type. I admit my perceptions of my father may be a little skewed but the darker side of this type seems to suit him.

It does make sense why there was a lot of friction growing up. It seems that we are complete opposites (I am INTJ) whilst my mother is an INxP. Bless her for being around is all I can say.

If he can't keep the grin off his face no matter what he's talking about or who he's talking to and barely takes anything seriously, it's definitely and ESFP I have a friend like that. Also if he can't focus his eyes on something for more than a few seconds.
