I listened to him in Black Flag and later in Rollins Band and he sang about introspection and hating being told how to feel and what to think. I related to his lyrics a fair bit. He's much older now and a lot more harder to pick since his functions would have leveled out now.
    Why INTJ and not ENTJ?

He sang about introspection and re-evaluating yourself in a few songs. He's more of an intense character in a private kind of way. ENTJs can be intense but it's more outward directed.

The easiest for me was to see him as an ENFJ with strong Se, ENFJ due to his compelling way of communication and Se probably developed alongside with mental strife in his youth. I think he developed temper problems due to his family environment which made him anti-social and a-social in Black Flag days and before that, a-typical for ENFJ but could explain things.

The problem with this is him being ok with being alone for allot of time, and ENFJ being very sociable creatures.
So, I will give some thoughts to the possibility of him being ENTJ, it seems that ENTJ deal far better with being-by-themselves as long they use their alone time to actually do something, or work on something to finalize later.
Actually, now that I think, ENTJ seems to fit much better.

He finds it quite easy to be honest about his flaws tough, but mostly in a joking manner, I don't know how easy is this for a typical ENTJ and I would have bet that an ENTJ would have got his shit together better in his youth, but he did get his shit together latter in life.

    I'm pretty sure he's a type 8 enneagram tough.

Why? I think he was an asshole while younger -macho-posturing,aggressive and sexist; but he seemed to have changed for the better in most ways.

He's abrasive and the things he says are so entirely insensitive.

Being abrasive is not enough to make someone an asshole.
As for insensitive, I think he can be really thoughtful, more than allot of people.

He comes across as an extrovert with a clear preference for Te/Fi instead of Ti/Fe.

I also can't really see him as an Si-aux type so that eliminates ESTJ or ESFJ (well he obviously wasn't an ESFJ anyways).

ENTJ or ESFP? If he is an ESFP he DEFINITELY doesn't fit the stereotypes. But he did grow up in a rough part of DC and had a tough childhood. And then toured with black flag and then later witnessed his best friend get murdered. He has gone through a lot, which might explain his more aggressive attitude. He's definitely passionate which would fit ESFP, and I can honestly see him as an Se-dom. He seems very driven by experiences and very in the moment in an Se-way when he's talking to crowds.

ENTJ would seem to make sense too. It would explain his aggressiveness and abrasiveness. He talks in a very direct way which seems Te-ish to me.

Edit: I just realized that would also leave the possibility for ENFP too. But, no, I really doubt he's an Ne-dom. Just by his mannerisms and way of speaking you can tell. He actually does get pretty clever with his wordplay and exaggerates his stories in interesting ways (in a way I as an Ne-dom can relate to), but if I really just can't see him as an Ne-dom. He'd be an extremely unusual Ne-dom, I think.
