Tattoos

So, I checked out the Wikipedia article on INFJ's for the first time this morning, and saw they had up a picture of some guy's tattoo (INFJ in big letters, and phrases in cuniform and latin) as an example of "INFJ tendency for abstract expression".

It was really odd to discover, as I personally have a tattoo; a latin phrase around the alchemal symbol for water; and it was like my tattoo was described to me by wikipedia

So I'm curious if there are others inked here, and how?

God that's too cool. I've always wanted a tattoo, but have never had the courage to get one :blushed:

I also don't know what I would get a tattoo of. Something in Latin sounds awesome. Maybe just the word "Poetry" for me.

As a water sign, I think that's too cool that you have an alchemical symbol for water as a tattoo

A friend of mine once dated a guy who had a favourite line of poetry tattooed around his forearm. I thought that was pretty cool.

I've wanted a tattoo since I was about five, believe it or not. The one I have now was a birthday gift a few years ago from a friend who had a bunch himself and liked pulling his friends down with him, heh.

I'm not a water symbol myself, but when it comes to astrology, I'm not much a good representation of Leo's anyway. There were a whole bunch of other things that went into the symbol choice, though.

I try not to be, but deep down I'm one of those tattoo snobs who winces a little when the reason for a certain tattoo was just "It was up at the parlor and looked pretty".

Hm, never really thought about it, but i think it is improbably that i will want a tattoo sometime.
Though sommetimes i admire a tattoo. Like the facial tattoo from Chakotay, of Startrek Voyager? I dunno, it doesn't represent anything (well, it is supposedly indian, from his tribe, but well...) but it looks good. After watching Voyager i looked at a photo of the actor without the tattoo (it being part of his role, not his own) and thought "Well, he loooks better with the tattoo). So i wonder if some forms of tattoos would have similar effects on me as well. But i would never consider a tattoo with a certain content in image or text...

All this talk of tattoos makes me want one

But I don't know what to get!! And I refuse to be one of those people Nightwine was talking about, who gets something on impulse because "it looked cool in the store." A tattoo is an addition to your body, it is part of the artistic depiction of yourself. It is not to be taken lightly, or done flippantly.

Something with water does resonate deeply with me. Latin too, or maybe Greek. I'm a lover of languages. We shall see.

I've only recently started wanting a tattoo, but I really want one now.
The thing is, I don't know what I'd get. I want someone with meaning, I don't want to get one just to get one, y'know?

A good thing to do is think of ideas you'd possibly like, and think about them for a year or two, let them grow or change. Mine started as just the latin phrase, Dum Spiro Spero, in a boxy square. It's kind of fun doing internet research and sketching things out.

Another tip I would have is LISTEN to the nice lady at the tattoo shop who talks about the piece with you. I am hoping that all places have someone like her, but I have a feeling that may not be the case. I was going to get my tattoo low on my inner forearm, near my wrist, and she said Nu uh, pick another place for your first tattoo. I chose my shoulder blade, and in retrospect, I am incredibly glad for it. My idea of what I was doing with my life changed since then, and while I'm still glad to have my tattoo, it is in a location where there are a number of cuts of classy dresses that will hide the tattoo, rather than having to grab a long sleeved one all the time.

Exactly! I figure if I like something...I'll frame it, but my mind doth change often. At one time I thought about putting a goblin on my ass so that when I aged...well, it would get better with all the sagging and wrinkles.

I only like the tats on others that have sentimental symbolism to it.

Yes, and even more about 40 years or more down the road? ;)

Don't feel bad for passing along information if it's good information :) I've heard this thing against lower back tattoos, but haven't looked into it beyond hearsay.

Not all angles of a decision are going to strike someone unless they're doing a hell of a lot of thinking and have a super mind (like Neph or Trope or someone ) And with something as hard to undo as tattoos, it's good to get all the angles first.

For example, some people don't really think about the consequences of getting a tattoo in a weight gain or growth area. Tattoos stretch with the skin, but they don't un-stretch when the area gets smaller again. Classic example is a tattoo around the navel, and then hello pregnancy!

Haha, idiots.
Well but it shows the nature of a tattoo: It is a thing which will be with you for a long time. ;)

I'm more into piercings than tattoos.

Oh do you have any piercings?

I must say though, I love love love love nose studs on girls.

Well, I figure black and grey would work better on me since I'm not a white guy and skin color shows through when you get a tattoo, which is honestly too bad. I would really have liked it to be in full color, but some people can do amazing things with black and grey. This would also help with the fading issue. After that, it's all about placement, sizing, and finding an artist who can draw what I want and make it 'come alive' for me. I haven't quite gotten to that last part yet.

Huh. That's interesting. I always thought against color because it seemed too cartoonish for me. It could just be the nature of all the colored tattoos I've seen, though, rather than the color itself.

And yeah. For me, the biggest thing will be the artist if I go again. I'm going to be very very very very picky about how the fur looks on the wolf, possibly to the point of not finding what I want.

I would not be able to get a tatoo. It just seems too permenant to me. The phrases and symbols I would use to describe myself now are not the ones I would have used to describe myself 4 years ago. To make matters worse I am very bad about coming to a final decision about anything. It took me 3 months to find a laptop for college even after I had it narrowed down. Even assuming I knew what I wanted, and was sure I would want it, I wouldnt know where to put it .

I think its the fact that once I have a tatoo I'm pretty much locked into having it that stops me from considering it the most.

I think that being a P type who dislikes finality has something to do with my choice. The desire to keep my options open will probably keep me from ever getting a tattoo. I don't usually like how they look on other people, even if the artist is skillful and the subject matter is personally significant. I am a dynamic character, and what fits me now might not mean anything in the future.

I have a feeling I'd never get a tattoo, but I decided to sketch this up a few days ago as a possible option for one, if I ever do end up getting one.

Do you guys like it?
I know the paw print idea is a little cliched, but it has symbolism to me and I also added some more personal symbolic flavor to fit me.

PS. Sorry for zombifying this thread, but it's still relevant today, so I figured I would resurrect it ;).

I love your idea there, Sihouetree!

I have two tattoos, both of which I drew myself. One is of Tare Panda and its about an inch or so below my collarbone. My other tat is kind of hard to imagine I think, but here goes nothing: It's two koi fish, swirling around one another in the way that a yin-yang symbol does. There are sakura blossoms mixed in and one fish is in the water and the other fish is in the sky. In the center is the kanji for my name.

Both of them have deep symbolism behind them. I need to finish getting my koi colored in. Since it was a larger piece the artist refused to do it all at once. lol. Mainly it just needs to be colored in since the outlines themselves took a little over 3 hours.

However, my problem is that while I know and need to finish that tat, I already know where I want my next one and of what. Tattoos are addictive.

Thanks :) I told one of my friends about it (didn't show it to her), and she thought it was really weird lol. Hmm...

Your tattoos sound really nice :) I've always identified well with pandas, and tare pandas (had to look them up) seem to add a nice twist to a normal panda :).

And your koi fish one sounds really cool too. I have a poster, sorta similar to that, it must look really nice!
Do you have roots of a particular Asian culture or do you just have a high interest in them?

I have two tattoos on my forearms....Japanese cursive Kanji that signifies that I have a 'yondan' or 4th degree black-belt in Aikido. The Japanese cursive style gives it a rather mysterious look since the symbols appear to flow together.

No tattoos here. I'm not against them on principle, but I doubt I will get one.

I'm too scared to get a tattoo - not because of the pain but I have real skin problems and I can see me having a bad reaction so I'm not going to risk it.
But if it wasn't for that I'd be covered in them by now. I'd want very tattoo to tell a story about my life, I don't like it when people get meaningless ones. I think they should mean something.
