    The Afterlife and Other Beliefs

    Hello everyone!

I started this thread in the INFJ forum but as usual, I'm interested to see what INTPs have to say about this as well.

I'm curious about your beliefs. Do you believe in the afterlife? If you don't, what do you think happens after you die? Do you think human beings have a soul? Will some of us be punished for what we have done in this life?

I don't want to start a fight among people of different religions or an argument about what's right or wrong. I just want to read your opinion.

I stopped believing in souls when no one would explain their atomic composition.

Afterlife- Probably not. I've never known of anything that suggested that could be a real possibility, except for religious texts and such, which all vary greatly with the specifics and are likely to be unreliable.

What happens after I die- Life goes on. For other people, anyway. I don't know anything for certain, no one does, so maybe there's something else, but it seems more likely that there isn't anything more than this reality.

Souls- Again, I don't see where the existence of such is suggested, so I don't believe in it. A soul would be someone's essence - it seems like our big complicated brains could easily be the source of everything we feel and think.

Punishment- If there isn't an afterlife, the concept of a soul is invalid, and after death my consciousness just stops being a thing, there isn't room for a heavenly justice system. Of course there is a chance, but as with the other things I don't see why I should consider that to be something that is probably going to happen. People are going to do bad things, maybe they'll get away with it sometimes. It doesn't matters to me whether they really, really regret it in the end. I try to be as decent as I can because I don't want to hurt anybody, not because I fear punishment in another life.

As for personal experiences of any kind with the supernatural: Our brains are very easily fooled, even without considering mental illness and drugs. I'm not going to believe in anything unless there is considerable proof behind it, and I would never just unquestioningly trust what I myself perceive if it seems to be particularly out of the ordinary.

Despite all this, I do secretly hope a little bit that I'm going to die, then wake up and regenerate into a duck. That would be the most pleasant surprise of all.

I don't have any beliefs about the afterlife - at least, nothing I feel strongly about. I entertain various ideas of the afterlife, such as that of Chinese folk 'religion'. It's food for the mind and, as a mortal, I enjoy thinking about things that are larger than life. But it remains just that - entertaining musings. Actually, the word 'entertainment' is wrong here as it cheapens what is quite a philosophical hobby.

Do you think human beings have a soul?

Maybe, maybe not. Like with the afterlife, I have no strong beliefs but I'm open to hearing everything. I enjoy reading about 'past life readings' and have even asked for one myself online. A lot of really interesting ideas there and, of course, it's up to me to take it or leave it. There are very intricate theories about the stages of souls, etc.

Will some of us be punished for what we have done in this life?

Punished by who?? What criteria? This is where my opinion starts to take form and I become vexed. Who is this being that judges us and why should it?

it would be more like the worst trolling idea.
Being a high form of intelligence and then get resurrected into a duck.

To have hope, this is what defines afterlife. To have hope that there it won't be nothing, but it will be something. To have hope, is something that doesn't stand in the non-believers in afterlife.

My belief's that I simply die. My organs starts to fail, my heart stops, my brain shutdowns. After time, the flesh that has left starts to rot. The skin, the muscles, the organs, the bones, all becomes dust.

I am just a part of the brain. I am that part of this beautiful organ, that evolved by collecting information and by achieving new skills and knowledge.
When I think at "who is this that controls my body? That talks, that thinks, that feels?", I refuse to say, that all this actions are made at the command of some "invisible composition of atoms", also called soul.

When we are born, we are animals. It is the education that has been offered to us, that makes us whom we are. It is in our knowledge that we deepen, in time. Of course, that's just one factor. But what I want to say is, that there's no such thing as soul.
If you want, dear reader who keeps insulting me, you can call it state of spirit.

We fear the unknown so we create paradoxes, just to have something to blame on. We create things and ideas beyond our understanding, so we have a pattern or something to cling on. We create afterlife, we create god, we create thousands of gods to keep us hoping, to limit us from the unknown. The unknown is unknown because it is big. It is huge and endless, but only because we fear to understand it. Over thinking too much makes us less sane. It is why we create Systems to follow. The Church, the religions, the so called books written by "god", all meant to offer an easier life for the common man. Well, thinking too big is not for everyone. And human nature, selfishness and corruption made the world you see.

A year ago, there was not a single day not to envy those who live with hope and live by the system. Their life is so easy. I won't get it, but I gave it a try. Fuck me and my personality and all who I am. I achieved some things, and now I feel lost. It was a bad thing, a good thing. w/e i bore u

Do you believe in the afterlife? No, whatever happens in after you die can't be life. The term after becomes relative because who knows if time is the same after you cease to exist. This term makes no sense to me so I don't believe in it.

If you don't, what do you think happens after you die? Your body decays but I believe there is another part of you that is preserved. It is most likely located in the mind. I believe this because it is congruent with my world view of recycling. If you believe that every new born form of life on this planet comes with a blank slate then my theory obviously doesn't work. But if you believe that new life forms with an innate...something...then it absolutely must come from a recycled form in my world view. This is a Buddhist perspective, I think. I remember learning about a metaphor in school where your consciousness is pooled together with everyone else's and swirled around in a big pool and refilled into the physical form of the human body like milk going into a container. I think it's close to something like that, maybe it happens in another dimension or in my basement.

Do you think human beings have a soul? I believe they do contain something other than the body (read in banes voice). Soul is such a stupid term, its not a floaty white ghost thing moving around capable of leaving bodies. The human mind spans infinitely inward converse to the universe that spans infinitely outward. What we mean by "soul" is most likely located in that infinite space within our minds. I don't think its external, and I think with enough introspection we can get a clearer picture of it.

Will some of us be punished for what we have done in this life? Lol no. Punishment/reward is a human emotional reinforcement tool and its mostly delusional to project this into metaphysics. Entropy/balance will prevail, thermal dynamics may affect things to make it look like reward/punishment to us but thats because we can't comprehend the full force of it. Our cognitive abilities are much to way to understand the forces in play here. I'm not about to simplify such complexity into a reward/punishment spectrum thats pretty lazy. Our perception is mostly emotional projection which I believe is very far off. Even Hitler who we perceive as the ultimate villain is such a microscopical part of the universe, why would it care its got bigger stuff to worry about (notice how I keep projection human tendencies to explain, its because I'm too dumb to comprehend the reality of it)? Karma is too optimistic and hopeful, the truth is more likely to be sadder and discouraging. So my answer to the question is no.

Death is in all probability like before you were born.
