Have you pinpointed your ideal career, but took another direction?

I'm not trying to make this yet another jobs/careers thread or a personal thing, so here we go...

I've been like many other ISTPs trying to find the right career after some career sampling and taking the wrong direction (have a Bachelor's, got some work in the field and either disliked it or couldn't find full-time work). So after taking the time to go through the typing, Holland Codes and finding the positives in past work experiences, I'm come to realize all the viable, personally interesting careers have limited secure job prospects or they are located in job fields that aren't going to experience job growth anytime soon unlike like something the healthcare industry has to offer. Maybe its my "realistic" mindset that drives me away from following my true ambitions.

So, I was wondering if other ISTPs have come to realization and have "settled" or taken a career path not ideal work because it was financially/conveniently/securely better?

In other words, have you pin-pointed your ideal/dream career, but went for something more realistic/conventional? Also, do you find you like the "idea" of certain jobs? (i.e. I always think I would love a career in Recreation of some sort, but after further thought, I would rather be the one participating in it rather than the one putting it all together).

I wanted to be a police officer.

I couldn't do it. I didn't meet the "standard" of vision, I'm nearsighted.

And that is not even the sad part.

The sad part is when I learned that I couldn't do the vision correction surgery because my pupils were too fucking big.

Oh well, at least I can stare at you in the dark.

I'm looking long term. Right now I'm in an accounting job and I'm gonna stay here 'till i get my CPA license. Then I'm gonna find something fun to do. Maybe audit for an international company so I can travel. It's pain and boredom now for lots of fun later.

This has been my mindset too. Find a career that pays well now, even if it isn't ideal, and find the fun down the line.

I've always liked drawing stuff / learning about language, but I always knew the Artistic path was never going to be financially stable and thus I considered going into the sciences until it killed my soul- while I did like learning about it I had to admit that it was never going to be the same sort of intense attraction and passion I had for drawing shit. I was literally shriveling up on the inside from the lack of avenues I had to express myself- and this was just in school, I couldn't imagine myself doing this as a job.

I'm thankful that my dad and my mom encouraged and supported me when I decided to follow my heart and go down the artistic path. I figured, "Hey I like making pretty visuals and coming up with cool solutions to problems! Isn't that what Graphic Design is about?" And I've been loving it ever since- though I have to be glad that I have more of an aptitude for the financially viable art route of Graphic Design rather than the "live to suffer for art" which Fine Art gravitates towards. :|

I do have to admit to the fact that there is the possibility that I'd just become an average Graphic Designer in some corporate firm, just living a menial life that never gets better though it never gets worst- or I can be bold, and push my work out there to make a name for myself and then become a highly desirable graphic designer who'd actually get flown to places/get sent awesome jobs just so people can feast on my brain juice!

Either way, Design is now my life and my soul, and I only sleep just to get out of bed, bright-eyed and 1000% ready to learn more/draw more/solve more rather than getting through the day just to sleep in my bed and hope that I never have to leave it lol.

I originally wanted to become a therapist, but I became very disenchanted with my studies in psychology, because, oddly, I didn't find it "scientific" enough. (Oddly for me because I was never interested in science before going to college.) I also realized I become intensely drained after talking to people about things that sadden them. I am very solutions-oriented, and I imagine that would only work for very particular personalities.

So I went back to my first love, writing, and that is how I eventually began my career. I think it was the better choice for me, as it allows me to make people laugh, allows an appropriate distance, and leaves something left over for my loved ones, and, you know... me. I am basically living my dream job, but part of me will always think, maybe I could have been a decent therapist if I'd stuck with it. But, I had to make a choice.
