    MBTI: Self-fulfilling prophecy?

Yeah, I'm probably not the first person to think or post about this, and if I am, then woo hoo!

I wonder if MBTI leads to a self-fulfilling prophecy. You take a test, see what type it gives you, and then you read the description of the type. Because of the label you have been given, would you subconsciously try to act like your label, thus actually "becoming" (or at least acting a lot like) the type despite it possibly being inaccurate? I think this is a real possibility.

I actually experienced this in a really liberating way. I'd been trying to act like an extroverted Feeling type my entire life, because I thought it would make me happier. When I realized I was an INTP it was kind of like I was granted permission to be who I already am. I didn't feel like I was missing some key element of humanity anymore, rather just my own, whole person. Not that I put all of my cards into MBTI typology... but it's so refreshing to see something say, "You, as you are, as a person, are whole and healthy. You aren't broken or missing something, you're just different."

Yes, I think MBTI can lead to a sort of self-fulfilling prophecy. It is part of the reason I would rather not take an IQ test. Once it's in my head, it's in.

Yeah. I don't think it's been a self-fulfilling prophecy for me, but when I act in a way that it would seem strange for an INTP to act, or come to conclusions a stereotypical INTP wouldn't come to, I do worry about myself. My main fear seems to be limitations of type. I have deep desires that many would tell me are impossible because of my type, and since there is a lot of evidence on their side I am compelled to listen to I have become quite distraught at times when I should not have allowed myself to be.

It can happen, but it shouldn't.

The deeper you go down into the rabbit hole, the more questions and understanding that you walk away with.

It should be used to understand your weaknesses and where you are likely to encounter problems and miscommunication with others.

Ohh, ignore them. People have told me the most ridiculous crap about why I'm not an INTP. xD "You feel emotions so you're not INTP" ; "You empathize so you're not INTP" ; "You're too chipper" ; "You blog" ; "You're too optimistic" ; "You're nice to people" ; "You're assertive"

Like what the hell do they think we are, a giant bag of Ti? It's called inferior Fe and internal judging functions, stupid bitches. Just because INTPs are very logical doesn't mean they're emotionally retarded.

Yeah, recently it's been ENTP I usually get "accused" of, since most people seem to sense a lot of Ne and Fe in me as well as a lot of Ti. It's really been a while since I've got INFP. People have at least accepted my NTP-ness. :P

I get accused of being ENTJ a lot, sometimes ENTP or INFP. It's just stereotyping. I happen to have picked up skills other than what comes naturally to me. If other INTPs aren't capable of this, that sucks for them.

I'm not comfortable enough with being an INTP to desperately try to fit the prescribed description.

I tried to act like my type but found that I wasn't good enough of an actor to play the part of a misunderstood social visionary with true realism. So I went back to just being myself.
