How can one differentiate experiential traits from personality traits?

I was writing an answer to a question and I began to wonder about a few things:

People develop differently due to a variety of reasons. If one has a trait that is common for his or her personality type, then how can that person determine if having that trait is a result of upbringing and experiences or personality? Basically nature vs nurture.

Moreover, how can someone distinguish between personal strengths/difficulties engendered by personality traits as opposed to those that have come about due to experience?
