I love Quindon Tarver's version from R & J, but this shows SO MUCH versatility. She made so many smart decisions musically here.

I just watched a bunch of these by Louisa Johnson.... her musical decisions are genius. The way she will change a melody for a bit, not just the rhythm (so brave-- but also change it in a way that still fits perfectly in the over-all song, and I'm not even sure people understand what she's doing) in order for full impact in the shape and dynamics for the song. Brilliant. It might be easier to see on a more well-known song. But I think I'm glad to find someone who is amazing at this because I sing... and sometimes you need ideas of how to not make a song repetitive and she for sure doesn't let a song get repetitive and seems to maximize the shape of the song experience. Not sure this is interesting to others, but I'm choosing to share. Musical decisions, yo!

I posted it because I was trying to point out the liberties this girl specifically takes with melody to amp up dynamics. " Everybody's Free" was an even better example because she changed the chorus melody and feel completely on the 1st chorus in order to really amplify the 2nd chorus and ending. I don't know if it's her (this girl) or the musical choices of the people behind the show--- but I learned something about choices you can make when you sing a cover in order to really shape the emotional impact of the song and do something very different with it. It's not like I think she out-sings Aretha, Paulie. I don't even like this cover, I don't think. I mean, I'd give it a 5. But what I'm pointing out especially on the Everybody's Free? Innovative and brilliant imo. We don't have to agree. I sing a lot of covers, though, and this taught me something. lol
