A new article explores the reasons behind the stereotype that men are funnier than women and find scientific proof to support it.

    I don't get this.

The authors conclude: "Our findings suggest that men's view that men are funnier could be a result of their actually finding the humor they produce funnier, as well as their biased recall of funny things as having sprung from men's minds. Women laughing more at men, when the gender is known, may be largely due not to superior humor, but to more social influences, which are known to impact laughter."
Kind of half hearted intention to make a joke in itself. Why bother to have the 1st study in the first place when the 2nd study will be the only source of the final conclusion. A false one at that too

    It's not funny. And dishonest.

And they sound like a propaganda.

Yes it does. The first study gave them a conclusion that they didn't want (i.e. both sexes find men funnier on average), which makes it suspicious that it was discarded from the final analysis. The supposition about women being socially influenced to laugh at men's jokes also appears to be completely unfounded (unless the first study actually had the raters evaluate as a group; the paragraph is unclear on that point, and it would be such stunningly poor study design that I would need to see confirmation of this being the case to even bother asserting it).

Yep men use humor mainly to socialise while women use other means :

Women tend to be able to use their beauty and charm to attract men and get people to rally around them as a support group. Plus women are better at expressing emotion, and tend to have better social skills. I think, at best, women are typically witty rather than actual funny.

Men are typically funny, because, males tend to struggle more socially than females, and don't feel as comfortable talking about emotion. It's easier to joke about how you feel if you don't feel right talking about it. Plus it's an acceptable way for a man to garner sympathy without looking unmanly and to attract women. Let men be the funny ones. We like funny men, anyway XD
Its also about the fact that sociaty works that way that men who are funny are ideal while women being funny is good but not as important.
Its about men being the hunters and the initiators while women being the perceivers and the judgers. Women fall in love mainly by brainstorming while men fall in love by being charmed by appearances and emotional exchanges.
Also men tend to be more eager to have fun and a good laugh in the heat of the moment while women could be more stressed or practical/mature. Thus there is the saying "men stay children forever while women mature early".
Being childish also has its charm (natural).

businessinsider.com The famous Stanford 'marshmallow test' suggested that kids with better self-control were more successful. But it's being challenged because of a major flaw.

From a evolutionary perspective, humor correlates with intelligence and social skills. That's probably why it's considered an attractive trait to female mate selection.

Social skills is something everyone consider attractive. However, in prehistoric life, an aggressive male without humor (indicator of lower social skills and intelligence) would produce a greater physical threat towards the safety of a tribe than any female. Given this, the genes of the dangerous brute with low social skills would have lower chances of reproduction. He would have higher chances of getting killed in conflict or by other tribe members, and in addition, the female selection process naturally preferred humor as it was a sign of intelligence and social skills, which increased their chances of intelligent offspring and thus; survival.

As humor correlates with intelligence, the funny male would naturally have a higher chance of survival, have less accidents, be smarter in conflict, be better at cooperating, and in general, navigate himself in dangerous environments with greater success.

TLDR; Sexual selection favor funny men because it's a sign of intelligence. This trait was more important in ancient times for men than for women. Non-funny men was probably less smart and socially skilled (thus attractive), which for various reasons caused a lower chance of survival and reproduction. Over thousands of years, sexual selection and survival caused the "unfunny" genes to be removed from the gene pool. This would happen at a higher rate for males (male intelligence was more frequently "tested" due to the environment), causing them to be the funnier gender.

Oh maybe that's why this doesn't apply to me.

From a feminist perspective, men were the founders and developers of mainstream humour as it is seen in society, and we are surrounded by this humour throughout our lives. What we find funny is socially constructed. Men find other men funnier as they can relate to their humour more. Although women respond to men's humour because they have been programmed to, imitating it themselves can be difficult, and because we have a narrow mind on what is considered 'humourous', women's unique contributions to humour are often ignored and underappreciated.
