Today I was privileged to meet the podcast creator and executive director of ForTheWild.world and was one of a small group to see a special screening of an upcoming documentary she worked on with 11 women in one of our last standing old growth forests.

Most importantly, I would like to spread the word about the 1 Million Redwoods Project.

"These trees are significantly compromised in the absence of essential fungal allies, companion plants, and the guidance of grandmother trees."

Ran into this in the first paragraph. What is a grandmother tree? And how does it offer guidance to other trees?

Google has not been helpful.

In 2006, land was annexed from the Sonoma Developmental Center to Jack London State Historic Park. The Sonoma Developmental Center, just south of Glen Ellen, is a state-owned facility for the mentally and physically impaired. The 1,600-acre facility is part of the small town of Eldridge, with its own post office and fire department. The annexed land is accessible from the main entrance to the state park, and includes trails to an enormous redwood tree (known as Ancient Redwood), a historic orchard, and Fern Lake. The Ancient Redwood, also known as Grandmother Redwood or Grandmother Tree, is a massive first growth redwood in a quiet grove. The giant tree has a huge girth with a 14-foot diameter and is estimated to be nearly 2,000 years old. The top of the stately tree is gone, either snapped off by the 1906 earthquake or destroyed by fire. The gnarled limbs and bark are visually striking. Owls are frequently spotted in the tree.

Ancient Redwood Trail
After logging the old growth forest, this 14-foot diameter giant redwood still stood. Often referred to as the “Grandmother Tree,” it is estimated to be 1800 to 2000 years old. Although the coast redwood is the tallest living thing in the world, this particular tree is wider than it is tall and therefore does not tower over the forest canopy.
