This thread is where people can talk about the 2016 Olympic games! :excitement:

All types welcome.

I intend to post things like what I watch or think about certain events. I also think it would be neat to talk about the various controversies surrounding this Olympics. Plus there are two new countries participating! Kosovo and South Sudan. A large number of the athletes from South Sudan are also refugees. Closer to home, Ireland's field hockey team is qualified to compete for the first time in over 100 years!

This ... is going to be ... the best thing EVER.

It's sad that stories about performance drugs, shameless marketing techniques, poverty in Rio, the Zika Virus and a bunch of other things are just dominating this Olympics. I'm curious. Belgians will probably not have a lot of medals. I am even not sure if we will have a medal, because we have no favourites, only outsiders (in sailing, judo, cycling, taekwondo, swimming (team) and discus row) . The Olympics are not hyped here too, because of the EC football that was hyped here. I think more Belgians are interested in the start of the English Premier League next week than the start of the Olympic Games this year.

I however really want to see some sports that are otherwise never shown on television and the Olympics are a great oppurtunity to see lesser known sports like beach volley, sailing, rowing. And i also love to watch swimming and gymnastics. I also like to see other nations on the Olympics. I always support some countries that I really like when I watched before. I think it's nice to watch it as a neatral watcher, although i doubt if i will see a lot from the Olympics.

There's these really cool videos explaining each Olympic sport on their YouTube channel :D Definitely worth checking out. I was watching the one on Olympic Taekwondo. This looks like some crazy Star Trek sport!

And of course, everyone loves to watch the diving, right?

I know! Not to mention the open political corruption. Brazil is a really interesting country to me. You should check out the movie City of God. Best movie ever. Brazil in many ways reminds me of the US. That's one of the reasons I want to travel there.

It's almost more boring to be in the US because we excel at a bunch of events. I love watching sports on TV, but I usually root for the underdog.

Note to everyone: Looks like the Olympic people aren't going to let me link their videos. But please post any sports stuff or news clips and other things! Remember. This sh1t is only going to happen once.

But they need to show it, although i will see taekwondo. I heard our highest medal chances are at taekwondo, for some reason, we have two world stars in that sport (and i never heard about it). I doubt if they will show diving. It's not up to me. I already saw the movie: City of God. It's one of my favourite movies.

I LOVE THE RIVALRY STORIES. In the US, our beef with Brazil besides soccer is volleyball and beach volleyball. Currently we're pretty close. I love stats too. Since I use to live in California, the women's beach volleyball finals were a huge deal because both athletes who won silver and gold were from California: Beach volleyball at the 2012 Summer Olympics – Women's tournament

Quick Guide to Olympic Volleyball:

At the last Summer Olympics, London 2012, four countries each earned one gold medal in the four categories: men's/women's, beach/regular: Brazil, Germany, Russia, and the United States.

Total Medals:

Brazil:

Beach Volleyball: 11
Regular Volleyball: 9

United States:

Beach Volleyball: 9
Regular Volleyball: 8

Brazil:

Beach Volleyball:

Gold: 2
Silver: 6
Bronze: 3
Total: 11

Regular Volleyball:

Gold: 4
Silver: 3
Bronze: 2
Total: 9

United States:

Beach Volleyball:

Gold: 6
Silver: 2
Bronze: 1
Total: 9

Regular Volleyball:

Gold: 3
Silver: 3
Bronze: 2
Total: 8

I might be the only one here most excited about the tennis...

Not at all! Both my father and my grandfather were great amateur tennis players. (I suck though.)

Basketball Specialty Channels
Bravo
CNBC
Golf Channel
MSNBC
NBC
NBC Sports Network
NBC UNIVERSO (Spanish)
Soccer Specialty Channels
TELEMUNDO (Spanish)

I'm notoriously bad at finding sports on TV, so I just write it down.

I started a bookmark folder too.

*Sigh* Feeling cold and lonely, wish i had someone to snuggle with, maybe i'll just snuggle up with a bottle of wine tonight...
WATCH THE OLYMPICS!!! IT'S ON AT 6:30 MOUNTAIN TIME MAN!

There's this awesome 30 for 30 I caught on Netflix. If you don't have Netflix, luckily, it's also available on YouTube for $2 American.

:D

The US-USSR Olympic ice hockey rivalry was one of the most famous sports rivalries in North America. Link: Wikipedia - Miracle on Ice

Here's the final two minutes of the miracle on ice:

I already saw the movie: City of God. It's one of my favorite movies.
Good taste! I guess I may as well throw this up here.

Here's a trailer for City of God (rated R for mature audiences):

This thread is absolutely going to be as much about Brazil as it is the Olympics!

They're a fascinating country. I don't know much about soccer, but in Europe, their fans are known for being crazy right?

I'll probably post some 'nature porn' form Brazil on my other thread.

This is our latest gold medal. Hope the second from then will win this year, because she was a great high jumper. General level of the race this year is a bit lower, and she still has a chance to win, so i will hope that she will wins, just as a reward for her career.

What day did the Olympics start? Hate to say it, but I only realised it was on already just now. Either way, the only sports I really care about is swimming, cycling and rowing
The opening ceremony was yesterday, Friday 5 August 2016. Hope you caught it! There'll be highlights on TV all week if you didn't.

Events I Might Watch Today:
Saturday 6 August 2016

2:00 PM MT on NBC - Women's Soccer: US v France
3:15 PM MT on NBC - Women's Volleyball: US v Puerto Rico
7:00 PM MT on NBCSN - Swimming, Beach Volleyball, and Gymnastics (program block)

I might catch a few innings of the Rockies v Marlins game at 6:10 too. It sucks that the first season I got into baseball is the Summer Olympics. Oh well. There's always next year. And Story got injured so the season's going south from here most likely.

Omg ... so you know when you get super drunk and the next morning you having random flash backs of the night before? I didn't touch a drop of alcohol but I was so h:crazy:gh that's still happening to me today. Awesome.

This time around the opening ceremony both showcased the hosting nation's culture and highlighted pressing world issues simutaneously, which was really neat :)
