I'm reading a book on the quality of one's life and it gives a list of the author's perceived "Core Values". As a reader, I am supposed to put the list of core values into order of importance in my life. I'm curious to know whether these values tend to rank similarly for most INTJs. Here's the list, please respond with order of most important at top proceeding to least important at the bottom:

- Physical Self (physical health, appearance, etc)
- Career (what you do to earn money)
- Finances (how you spend/save your money)
- Mental Self (mental stimulation/growth)
- Romance/Significant Other (duh)
- Physical Surroundings (house, location, climate)
- Fun/Recreation (hobbies, entertainment, etc)
- Family & Friends (another duh)

1 Mental Self (mental stimulation/growth)
2 Career (what you do to earn money)
3 Family & Friends
4 Romance/Significant Other
5 Physical Surroundings (house, location, climate)
6 Fun/Recreation (hobbies, entertainment, etc)
7 Physical Self (physical health, appearance, etc)
8 Finances (how you spend/save your money)

I agree with ChanceyRose, values change with age so note it ( I am 36).

But this is a very very difficult list to compile because a lot of these voices merge naturally, or if they don't I try to make them the same in my life...as 1+2+6, or 3+4+1 or 5+6+7 ... 8 only is far above (i daresay instrumental to) the others.

A lot less important:

- Career (what you do to earn money)
- Romance/Significant Other (duh)
- Fun/Recreation (hobbies, entertainment, etc)
- Physical Self (physical health, appearance, etc)

These two are so far down I barely care:

- Physical Surroundings (house, location, climate)
- Family & Friends (another duh)

Not entirely sure about the order of the last four.

- Mental Self (mental stimulation/growth)
- Fun/Recreation (hobbies, entertainment, etc) (Goes hand in hand with mental self).
- Physical Self (physical health, appearance, etc)
- Career (what you do to earn money)
- Finances (how you spend/save your money)
- Romance/Significant Other (duh)
- Family & Friends (another duh)
- Physical Surroundings (house, location, climate)

All of these are still really important though, even if physical surroundings is last I can't focus if I am not in a comfortable stance.

My ordering...

- Finances (how you spend/save your money)
- Physical Surroundings (house, location, climate)
- Career (what you do to earn money)
- Mental Self (mental stimulation/growth)
- Fun/Recreation (hobbies, entertainment, etc)
- Romance/Significant Other (duh)
- Family & Friends (another duh)
- Physical Self (physical health, appearance, etc)

First are those essentials of life: Money, shelter, food, other basic things around me that I need to live. Then comes the stuff in my head, followed by relationship options and lastly my physical self for a reasoning on my order selection.

The consensus on INTJ core values seems to be fairly simple, in no particular order:

  • Liberty - The right to freely express opinions between parties
  • Plurality - People to be allowed to make their own individual decisions
  • Criticial Thinking - To be allowed to logically de construct and reconstruct said opinions
  • Privacy - Freedom to keep things private
  • Independence - Not to be subject to incompetence, whether that is our own or others

I put these 2 "duh"s in a seperate list because the above list and this list exist next to eachother. I can't order these 2 within the list above.
- Romance/Significant Other (duh)
- Family & Friends (another duh)

Why do they put friends and family together anyway? They should be separate. As if those 2 exist in the same plane. They don't!

... put the list of core values into order of importance in my life...please respond with order of most important at top proceeding to least important at the bottom:
At the age of 42 with two small children, confused between "importance" and "my core values".

Just me...
- Mental Self (mental stimulation/growth)
- Career (what you do to earn money --> what I do that I enjoy)
- Physical Surroundings (house, location, climate)
- Romance/Significant Other (INTJ style)
- Physical Self (physical health, appearance, etc)
- Fun/Recreation (hobbies, entertainment, etc)
- Family & Friends (another duh)
- Finances (how you spend/save your money)

As a parent in my current situation...
- Mental Self (mental stimulation/growth)
- Career (what you do to earn money & enjoy)
- Physical Self (kids' physical health, appearance, etc)
- Family & Friends (i.e., my kids another duh)
- Finances (how you spend/save your money)
- Physical Surroundings (house, location, climate)
- Fun/Recreation (hobbies, entertainment, etc)
- Romance/Significant Other (duh)

Much like Expat, my "perfect world" response (if I were living in a manner that is true to myself) would be:

1 - Mental Self
2 - Physical Surroundings
3 - Finances
4 - Fun / Recreation
5 - Physical Self
6 - Career
7 - Significant Other
8 - Family & Friends

However, due to my current circumstances, I'm struggling with an out of balance priority list and trying to find a way to balance it with minimal collateral damage to those in my life:

7 - Significant Other
1 - Mental Self
8 - Family & Friends
2 - Physical Surroundings
3 - Finances
6 - Career
4 - Fun / Recreation
5 - Physical Self

And it's KILLING ME... *sigh*
