I think it's because we're so in-tune with the emotions of others around us.
I can usually tell if there's something wrong with a close one just by how they're sitting or moving, and even with people I don't know.
Like today in my Communications class, I could tell that my professor was becoming rather irritated with a student by the way the had her hands firmly planted on her podium and how she was pointedly staring in the opposite direction as him. There's something in the eyes, too...always in the eyes.
