It's not like I don't like or play video games at all, but I REAAAALY suck at them, so I don't usually get much enjoyment out of them. And when I do, it turns into a "look at the pretty graphics" or "I can shoot lightning bolts...awesome!" fest. I know it's a stereotype that INTP's are basement-dwelling hermits that do nothing but play Starcraft (or whatever people are into nowadays) into the wee hours of the morning (my roommate *cough cough*), but I'm just curious...is there anyone else here who ISN'T a complete video game fiend?

I played video games a lot prior to adolescence, but my interest in them declined over during teenage years. I now seldom play video games anymore, with the major exception of having them around to kill time when I'm having to wait a long time somewhere. I'm not at all literate about current game consoles (my most recent consoles of heavy use were the Playstation 1 and SNES), and I never got into online gaming. I was mostly interested in RPGs (Final Fantasy-style, Wild ARMs, etc), along with platform games such as Mega Man X and the Mario series. I also played a couple of FPS, Doom and Duke Nukem 3D.

All the intp's I know don't play video games..... actually..... cept 1. She's hilarious with her game boy.
Weird...it's been the exact opposite for me. But I've found there's two different types of INTP's...the computer programmer/nerd, who thrives on them, and the poetic cynic, who tends to shun pretty much everything that doesn't involve weed:tongue:!

I actually can't stand video games! I don't see any point to them!

I notice that your thinking and feeling functions are balanced. Mine are also. Could our not being into video games be an INFP thing?

i love video games. or at least i used to. i think alot of video games today are quite boring, the good ones are too far between. nowadays i hardly play. i don't like fps or movie style adventure games or anything that tries to be flashy and cool. i am somewhat updated on what's out there, i find the possibilities in the industry very fascinating. the only good game atm is super mario galaxy 2 and deamon souls. other games i've enjoyed: diablo, wow, football manager, kotor, shogun total war, old lucas arts games (full throttle), old snes and nes games, old amiga games (moonstone anyone?)

I totally get what you mean when you say "no point to them"! That's what I feel after I watch most action movies:wink:. Yup...I think the balanced functions have a lot to do with it...the T part would enjoy the "problem solving" bits but then the F part gets in the way by asking "what's the intrinsic value of this"...and then tells us to give up. (Ftr, I believe in the lasagna theory).

That being said, I've met an INFP (or, at least, a super-sensitive INTP who was into English lit ) who was obsessed. But again, I think the whole Ne-driven "Wow! Magical Creatures!" thing was the culprit.

I think that your take on why we don't see the point makes perfect sense. What is the lasagna theory?

Are you and I really INFPs lost in an INTP forum?

I was a very avid gamer until around high school age. Around that time I just lost interest and never really regained it. These days I still have my NES and SNES hooked up and play them from time to time. For a while I would buy games that I never had or could rent when I was younger but now I mostly download ROMs of those and other older systems/arcade games. I play some online puzzle/strategy games but that's about it. While I can see the appeal lots of different kinds of games have and think I might be able to get into them if I chose to, it's just something I don't have enough of an interest to devote the time and money to it.

Happy to explain. For an INTP:

STANDARD THEORY: Ni Te Fi Se Ne Ti Fe Si

LASAGNA THEORY: Ti Ne Fi Se Ni Te Si Fe

Are you and I really INFPs lost in an INTP forum?
As for this point...oooooooh, you've opened quite the kettle of fish. (I gather this has been bothering you to no end as well). I originally typed myself as an INFP, came to realize I was more like an INTP in certain ways, and am now beginning to wonder if I might be INFP after all the more I examine myself. But now I'm starting to doubt that. I kinda like not knowing, though...in fact, I sort of dread knowing. If I did, I might give up on some of my dearest dreams, with the defeatist "there's no way my type can do it" as my mantra. Sooner or later, I'd start living my life in accordance with an internet description, not my own heart, and once you've done that, well, personal happiness becomes nothing more than a hopeless fantasy...:frustrating:

I love my video games. Though I only go through "bursts" of playing. It's how I do everything, in bursts. Of course, gaming is still the reason I'm spending money on getting a new laptop instead of just fixing the hard drive in this one.
Pretty much this, only without the laptop stuff.

With respect to the INTPs here who don't seem to enjoy them (and my biological father who's an INTP and criticizes me for being a "gamer"), here's my top 10 list!:

1. Pokemon Silver/GTA: San Andreas
3. Left 4 Dead
4. GTA IV
5. Borderlands
6. Pokemon Soul Silver
7. Red Dead Redemption
8. Half-Life 2
9. Split/Second
10. Left 4 Dead 2

I could like them, but I don't have any consoles, and I don't play games on my computer that only run full screen. actually these days I don't play any games on my computer at all. but I have played some, and I can enjoy them. (I'm not one of those people who don't get how video games could be fun.) however, I can get really obsessed and not stop playing even though I know I should and even though I want to. then when I finally do, I feel extremely dissatisfied with myself. (I can waste time on the internet and not feel the same deep dissatisfaction afterward.) so I just don't play them.

Choose the appropiate computer game. I suggest you HALF LIFE series (mmm what a coincidence ). Cyberpunk-like are usually very good for us (interesting history, technology, deep thoughts): DEUS EX, best computer game ever (that's my opinon of couse).
If they've an interesting history, I enjoy them (I see them as a film under my control).
