I think the same may respectively go for all Enneatypes. When one uses the Enneatype's motivation to go after the type's typical self-interests, they end up going in circles and justifying their ignorances. When we 4s go on feeling sorry for ourselves because we're not as close to immaculate as we imagine we are, or can be, in our minds we take that 4 route of blaming others for our problems when we identify as being different from an unthinking, simplistic majority. For the sake of living up to virtue we may just downplay it, and carry on with life 'til the cycle repeats.

This may render an Enneatype's "average" functioning rather inconducive for progress. However, imperfection is a part of balance, and can lead to some evocative accomplishments. So, the circular, average horizon of 4s would be full of maladjustment, but graced with colorful compensations, whether in the form of 4w3s' hypomanic behaviors and appearances (Courtney not-an-8 Love, Michael Jackson), or 4w5s' compulsive tactics and hoarding (Johnny Depp, Kurt Cobain). Colorful, but still not quite productive to sustaining oneself.

What 4s need is not a sturdy image, but self-confidence that supercedes it - the faith in themselves not to overdo things. Have you ever noticed how being the typical 4 just gets repetitive? Highs, lows, identity, emptiness..., unless you're healthy, in which case the 4's habits will more often work for you instead of against you.
