I've taken 10+ tests, with very, very mixed results between the two. The INTx seems pretty definite, while the J or P seems nearly 50-50 much of the time. Are there any clear-cut signs that I am an INTJ? Because it seems I'm leaning towards it over INTP.

Thanks.

Post a nice long winded rant on here and we'll be able to tell which of those you are. The two aren't anything alike and INTP has a definate flavour to it that is particularly irritating to the INTJ. Have you done a functions test yet?

Because the difference is whether you use Ni & Te and Ti & Ne. Both of those function sets operate in completely different ways. An INTP is not just a less definite INTJ. We don't even have the same motivations nor reach our conclusions in similar ways. INTP is one of the types I have the most communication problems with because our focus is so far apart.

Research the differences in those functions and take a function test to discover which of them you use most heavily.

See what I mean? Now seriously. INTP are the true analysts IMO, they love scientific method....investigate, data collecting and collating. INTJ prefers selective data collection based on relevance and because of that are kind of bias confirming. It's not truly scientific in the objective sense.

Alright, I'll rant about homework.

Honestly, it's not like I think homework is stupid -- I don't, I feel like in the earlier years, before studying is required to do well on tests, homework prepares you for when studying actually does matter. Not only that, but it reinforces what you've learned that day in the subject -- that is, unless it's pages, upon pages, upon pages of math problems that I already understood because, even though it's an honors class we've been doing the same thing FOR TWO FULL DAYS. Goddamn, it's like half my class is idiots, honestly, and we're the smart ones. My point here is homework, though useful to an extent, has a line where it goes from useful to idiotic busy work. I have better things to do with my time than to "reinforce" knowledge that is already perfectly fine and in my head that I already understand. It puts un-needed stress on myself, and it focuses my precious free time on it. It's extremely frustrating to have to sit though an hour of a class, learn information (that I probably will never use after I leave the class, no less) and then have to do work on it. Outside of a subject like math, reinforcement isn't even really needed -- the only time I really need it if it's a subject where practice is the only way to get good at the subject, for example, (as I said before) math. But, like I've mentioned, there is, of course, a line. You have to stop somewhere, and there are certain times that 10 problems is good enough to make sure I know the information. And sometimes it shouldn't even be required to have homework that day if you understand it. Maybe the teacher could give a short assessment towards the end of the period for the teacher to know if we understand it or not -- under a certain score, more homework is required, over that score, less (or even none) is assigned. BUT, this assessment should also count for nothing as the subject is barely learned for some and it's kind of unfair to judge someone after only a little time learning the lesson. This makes sense but would never get accepted by any school board -- but I'm not going to get into that now, that's a WHOLE other conversation.

Anyway, that's my rant.

I'm leaning on the side of intp here. Your reasoning goes beyond the usual selfishness of I don't want/need to because I'm super clever. Into peripheral subjects of the education system, how it works and doesn't work. The function of homework itself and whether or not reinforcement is even relevant to the subject at hand. That demonstrates a broader point of view and a desire to question the underlying function of it.

When I question a system it's not usually that encompassing. I usually pick a single point of weakness and focus on that. As I said, take a cognitive function test and have a look of your scores as well. Also hang out on both the INTP and INTJ board and see which you relate to the best. It seems that you are quite young (in college?) and certain aspects may not be all that conscious yet.

Your writing style here is more INTPish. INTJs usually use shorter paragraphs, and are fond of lists. INTPs usually have longer paragraphs. INTJs like examples and comparisons, INTPs like a chain of logic. I know those seem like unimportant differences, but I think they are a reflection of our different thought processes.

Also, INTPs seem to have a lot more patience for long debates about philosophy, morality, the meaning of life, stuff like that. Sometimes someone will start a thread about something like that on the INTJ forum, and after a while the only people left posting are INTPs. The INTJs all got impatient and left the discussion.
@BigApplePi is an INTP who posts a lot on the INTJ subforum. The style of his posts make me think "INTP" every time. They are very different from the INTJs he is conversing with.

Haha, alright. Thanks. I am young, younger than college even, but I guess mature enough to pass off as a college student I guess. Regardless, you are probably right -- obviously, as I've gotten older, more has developed but I'm not fully conscious about who exactly I am and what personality type I am. Initially in my life I seemed less INTx, but now much more that way as I've became more of a thinker/problem solver who is more internal and prefers to sit around and read or ponder my thoughts instead of go to some party.

Anyway, I took a cognitive function test as you suggested, and I got:

Te (Extroverted Thinking) (45%)
your valuation of / adherence to logic of external systems / hierarchies / methods

Ti (Introverted Thinking) (85%)
your valuation of / adherence to your own internally devised logic/rational

Ne (Extroverted Intuition) (65%)
your valuation of / tendency towards free association and creating with external stimuli

Ni (Introverted Intuition) (70%)
your valuation of / tendency towards internal/original free association and creativity

Se (Extroverted Sensing) (15%)
your valuation of / tendency to fully experience the world unfiltered, in the moment

Si (Introverted Sensing) (70%)
your valuation of / focus on internal sensations and reliving past moments

Fe (Extroverted Feeling) (30%)
your valuation of / adherence to external morals, ethics, traditions, customs, groups

Fi (Introverted Feeling) (55%)
your valuation of / adherence to the sanctity of your own feelings / ideals / sentiment

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
based on your results your type is likely - intp

Not quite sure what that means, but hopefully someone can make sense of it -- it looks like I'm an INTP after all I guess. But who knows, I'm the one asking the questions here.

The only one I really am questioning on this, though, is Se, because I don't often live in the moment -- I'm always thinking about the future, and planning. It IS a pretty low percent though, so of course it probably could go either way.

Your leading function is Ti, and Ne is scoring only slightly below Ni. Ti-Ne is likely for you. Especially with developed Si which ranks as the tertiary function for INTPs.

My cognitive stack looks more like Ni, Fi & Te in the lead. Fi is the tertiary function for INTJs, so even though it rivals Ni in strength for me now, it didn't always. Meanwhile my scores for Ti and Ne are both weak.

What does that mean in regards to INTP vs INTJ? That I'm an INTP? I'm assuming it does as you stated how I have a function like most INTPs, but I just want to confirm.

Alright, thanks for all your help! I looked on the INTP forum and I seemed to relate more with them than INTJs, so I guess I'm an INTP.

We have been working on that flavor for decades using all manner of scientific means just to irritate you guys. It doubles as a defense mechanism.

INTP: fluffy goofball. Make amusing sounds when poked with sticks.
INTJ: to the point. Also make amusing sounds when poked with sticks.

On my profile page, someone posted a couple of videos a while back that helped me figure out INTP vs INTJ (the first video in particular). Might help you out!

That's fairly accurate maust. I see you rate yourself ENTJ.

I'm kinda curious. I would like to have a special selection of INTJs and INTPs poke YOU with a stick. Are you up for it? I must come up with a double blind test.

The people selected to poke you won't know they are selected. You will wear a blindfold. INTPs and INTJs won't know who they are poking but it will be you. I want to hear those sounds. A blind recorder will judge by your sound who is doing the poking in which category. There will be random times between pokings. I want to give you time to recover ... can't have one poke influence the next one ya know. Makes sense?

And there you go @_ChaR, the intp at work.
