Type 5
– Fives are similar to fours in many ways. They are deep, independent, and not mainstream. However, their range of interests trend more toward the cerebral rather than the emotional. Fives love science and technology of all kinds, and a career in one of these fields would definitely be optimal. Fives also have the gift of being able to work independently, which is critical in research positions, which they would also enjoy. Long hours of study and alone-time with something gripping and engaging will appeal to this type. More extroverted types would shy away from and/or become bored with some of these positions.
Fives can really make a difference in the world through pioneering (and sometimes isolating) research!

Suggested Careers for Fives:
Science and technology are areas where Fives will thrive.

  • Astronomer

Type 5 – The most introverted of all the types, you probably are not going to be happy if you have to deal with a constant bombardment of people. In general, you have a certain kind of disdain for the public, crowds, and excessive noise. It would be wise to avoid these things on the job if you can get away with it. Also, you need mental stimulation and a sense that you are accomplishing something worthwhile in your profession. 5′s love to blaze trails of discovery within a field of focus. They do not like to be in boring, stale environments with little room for growth. Avoid these occupations, dear 5′s!

Bad Career Choices and the Enneagram – The Great Office Escape

I'm a part-time retail sales clerk at the moment and some days it is my idea of hell. After every shift it takes a few hours (sometimes days) for me to recover.

I think things like being an actor, fashion designer, professional athlete are perfectly achievable for a 5, if that is where their interests/passions lie. In fact, they'd probably excel, because they would have incredible focus and would probably become consumed by their craft (for better or worse).

Bad Career Choices and the Enneagram – The Great Office Escape
One of the worst jobs I had was working at call centers as a customer service representative. I lasted a few months after getting burned out by the constant ringing of the phones. I also worked as a Helpdesk Support at an IT department. I quit after 5 1/2 months, not to mention calling in sick every other week.

Now my current job provides me a lot of independent work with no phone interruptions. Sweet!

5w4, Strategy consultant, background in chemical engineering. Like it very much.

Anything that involves me being a problem solver/expert is fine with me though.

I have to say I hate hate HATE the powerpoint part of being a consultant though. So many boring details to manage; can't wait until somebody does that for me and I can critique :)

5w4 INTJ, and intellectual property attorney. I spend all day dealing with creative clients and unique situations, and trying to strategize how to extract economic value from abstract intellectual property. Most of my work is future oriented strategy, as opposed to litigation which is just cleaning up the mess on hindsight.

While I appreciate the ideas involved, I prefer Litigating and Prosecuting only because I get to 'solve' the case. It gives me a sense of closure and accomplishment.

I always read how 5-s are supposed to find an area to specialise in but it just never happens this way for me. There's nothing I feel a lasting passion for, more than a few months at most. I thought I found "the one" a couple of times now, but it never proved to be long-lasting. Forcing myself to stick with one thing makes me feel miserable but always just consuming knowledge and interesting new concepts doesn't give any output that I could make a living out of. Is anyone familiar with Barbara Sher's work about 'scanners'? I'm very strongly one :/ (For those who don't know what is it: RosineCaplot.com | Are you a scanner?)

INFP. 5w6 and I will be a qualified drug dealer.

I'm happy with my degree but I fear that it won't be intellectually stimulating in the future so I plan to do postgraduate studies. I denied that I was 5 but with wing 6, it makes sense that I would choose that career.

The first three would be my idea of hell. Delivery or bus driver, I could tolerate. It could get boring, driving the same route all the time, but it would also give me a chance to slip into my thoughts. Delivery driver would be better than the latter, wouldn't have to deal with so many obnoxious people. I don't have the talent to be a professional athlete, I wouldn't like all of that attention focused on me. If it wasn't such a high-profile sport and I loved doing it, I might reconsider. The last two, I don't see as typical choices of 5's but I think 5w4's in particular could be drawn to them if they got to utilize their creative skills and if they could do it their own way rather than what others want. True 5's tend to shun the limelight- probably why actor is on the list but I've known people who act who are quite quiet and reserved. When you act, you take on the persona of someone else temporarily. I would never want to be a Hollywood actor for the same reason I don't want to be a professional athlete- too much attention, no privacy, millions of eyes on you. If I had the talent and interest, I could see myself acting on a smaller scale, like local community theater productions.

When I was a child I had a secret dream of becoming an actress. Idk If I would want to now, realistically. But I like to think I COULD.
Fashion design, I was actually really interested in during my teen years. I even took a class on it. I just kind of lost interest. But I don't see why a 5 couldn't do well in fashion designing. There's less limelight than acting, more creativity involved, and so much [thinky] planning and researching. Particularly 5w4's I believe could make some very innovative fashion designers, if they could find an individual purpose for doing so.
