My longtime landlords live next door. We have a cordial relationship but are not friends. I've had little to do with their (now adult) children.

One young son is dying, and there will be a celebration of life this week. I've never been to anything like this for someone who is still alive.

Would I be expected to go, or is it more for people who actually had a relationship with him? If I go, what is expected of me?

Although I actually avoid funerals, for this family I would show up for a funeral. But this isn't actually a funeral. What are your thoughts? Thank you.

I've decided that it isn't necessary for me to go. I think it's more for friends and family, or people whose lives he touched in some way. My presence wouldn't enhance his day, and my absence wouldn't be taken as an insult.
