Cold/Flu and You

2435 Views 21 Replies 20 Participants Last post by  INFJRoanna
Hey there, crazy kids!

When you come down with the cold or flu, how do you deal with it? Do you get grumpy? Do you let others know you're feeling miserable or do you try to deal with it yourself? Do you downplay it as something insignificant, or do you play it up for as much sympathy as you can get?

Just curious. Feel free to discuss however you wish.

I like to be left alone when I'm sick unless I'm near death and have to go to the emergency room. If it is just a cold or the flu, I've got my potions, bananas, water and pills on hand next to my bed to deal with it prn.

When I get sick I don't want to be cuddled. I don't want anyone saying anything comforting. I just want to be alone and sleep. I may take over the counter cough syrup if it's bronchial related. Coughing at night to disrupt sleep is the worst thing ever.

Like @Eudaimonia, I like to be left alone. Unless I am am actually dying, or have a broken leg or something, I try to downplay whatever illness I may have and just carry on. I have always been like this, though being in the military, where it was typically not worth the trouble involved, plus just that general feeling of "mission first, no matter what, strengthened it bit. During training, I once carried on with a severe toothache so I would not have to miss class, and went directly to a meeting directly after waking up from cancer surgery (despite the protestations of the hospital staff), and then back to class the next day,and acted as if nothing had happened, though I had a little trouble walking for a couple of days).

I terrified that people will see me at my worst and make a judgment on me from being seen as vulnerable, so I press on as if the symptoms aren't there, and that all is well.

Most of it is based upon allergies and colds, though.
Somehow, I've inherited genes from someone that has kept me from getting a headache over the last dozen years, kept me from the obvious signs of a hangover, and from getting the flu since I was in grade school (this is going back to the dawn of MTV and the space shuttle).

When colds are at their worst, I carry on the usual schedule, but try my best to keep from being seen.

I am probably the most annoying person on the planet when I am sick. The "pre" sickness must be pure agony for everyone around me, as I tend to freak out and think "HOLY BALLS I HAVE ALL THE CANCERS AND EBOLA" but I really just have bad allergies. Once I am sick though, I tend to just sleep a lot and take my medicine.

This is actually me before I get sick. Then it turns into "I will be fine tomorrow." I tend to recover faster than anyone else in my family so placebo might just be working.

Heh. I tend to downplay the cold. I hate getting sick. I feel like each time I'm sick it has the worst timing. I'm in the middle of doing so many things (not true). My mind usually moves toward the future, planning things that I will totally do once I'm better.

This is one of the reasons why I don't like cold weather! My nose gets runny and I can't breathe from them properly, and I might also feel a bit weaker. I usually use a strong nasal spray as I cannot properly function mentally with that.

I try to take meds right away to cure it fast, however it seems that I get very very sleepy after taking them... If I drink coffee, my mind would be awake but my body feels that sleepiness sensation, as if I'm a bit sedated and it feels hard to move around.

I don't have much changes otherwise and I don't feel moody, I just prefer to sleep more if I can as it helps cure faster.

There were some much worse times in which I had a very bad cough, I felt like I probably scared a few coworkers with that. Oh, and it seems that in the winter I might sometimes suddenly feel very itchy in a spot inside my throat that leads to dry cough for some secs.

I am currently sick so I can talk first hand about how I behave when I am feeling this way. Let´s see......
I am docile and quiet and never ever complain

Ok, ok I admit that I get grumpy and easily annoyed, that is why I want to be left alone. Staying in bed is always a good idea and so I just sleep through it.
I am a huge baby to take meds, I don´t like them and so I make a huge deal about taking them and only accept to take them when I feel like my body can´t make it.
And even then is rare for me to take my meds on time because I am a rebel idiot

When I'm sick I just deal with it as independently as I can. I won't even take medicine, I'll just drink a bunch of water and hope for the best. I don't know why but I just hate taking meds when I have a cold. I generally don't care for anyone's sympathy in these situations. I'm sick but I'll get over it. I usually recover fast anyway.
Too stubborn.

I've noticed that if its a physical sickness I brush it off, but if it's mental I'll be popping pills like mad.

For something like a cold or flu, I gobble Vitamin C & D, take aspirin or ibuprofen for headaches, and get plenty of sleep. Valerian and 5-HTP is good for sleep. A good food is chicken noodle soup with saltine crackers and real butter. For non-sleep times, there are puzzles, reading, listening to radio, imagining some adventure, or even getting on the net.

When I was little I tended to cry myself out at my moms shoulder because she worked and rarely was ever here, I begged for her attention this way >.<
Now I am mostly just sleeping not talking to anyone and getting over with it. Only if it is really really bad...like fever and vomiting all the time I would call my mother for some support.
I do have a job where being sick is 'not allowed' I work until I really can't do it anymore (a cold would never stop me from working). This means I can be sick, run to the bathroom, vomit and get back to work. YAY and my bosses never realize I'm feeling this bad. I rarely take medicine because most of it does not seem to work for me. If I have a sick headache, I just put my sunglasses on for work.

They're horrible. I hate having to blow my nose every other minute every waking hour.

Sore throats are the worst but, I couldn't imagine a more disgusting feeling.

I hate being sick. If I can move and get out of bed, it can't stop me! Well, I might not actually be able to do any work but I sure can cook for myself. I love to have congee because that's what my mother gave me when I was young and got infections so easily. Other than that, honey lemon and ginger tea... and any clear soups/broth. I don't like taking medicine, mostly because once you have the cold/flu, you're going to have to take time to recover. If I need to do stuff, I'll take those cold/flu tablet things with phenylephrine even though it's nothing compared to pseudoephedrine... and usually, it'll also contain paracetamol/acetaminophen. It helps a little with the symptoms. If I don't need to do stuff, I'll rest.

Oh, Lord. Are you in my house this week or something? Lol I typically just try to care for myself & carry on resting when I can. I haven't been to the doctor in several years, and that was a well checkup. Luckily, I have a couple of wonderful daughters that try to help me & take care of me without me even asking. My oldest (INTJ), especially. She cooked dinner for me last night, did dishes, and cleaned the kitchen. Sunday will be a week that I've been sick. I really hope it will be over by then. :(

The first symptom of getting really sick for me is "I just want to go home". Becuse I do. I really do. I want to go home and hide in my bed until I'll feel better.

If I have to go to work, or something - I'm taking tons of pills and I try to make it through. I try to avoid any attention (which is not so easy then, since I get tons of comments about how horrible I look and how pale am I - and I'm like "this is just my face, lol". I talk less than usual (which is not so much in the first place). I just try to do my job and smile to people around on demand (when they look at me), like it could change something.

The funnier it gets if I'm seriously sick. Some time ago I've had pneumonia, with a really exhausting fever. I could barely walk. Every time when I was standing up, I felt a pulsing pain in my head. I was on my own - as always. I could really use some help then, though. I switched to some self-motivating mode like "Okay buddy... now we're going to stand up really slowly and just try to get to the kitchen, how about this? Yeah, I know that it doesn't sound like a good idea, but you need to drink some water sometimes, or you'll die, or something and nobody's gonna find your corpse for a week or so"...
Reason, optimism and self-help with 104,9 F / 40,5 C. Not bad at all.

I'm dealing with a cold right now myself. I'm sure most of you could've guessed that, but whatever.

In all honesty, it hasn't been that bad, except for one issue. There hasn't been any vomiting, or a lot of sneezing. I was only physically weak the first day I had it. No fever or anything like that. However, there is the one issue I mentioned. My throat. Soreness and coughing, like constantly. And it's seriously the most dibilitating cold issue I've ever had. :frustrating:

I kept coughing so much last night that I could barely sleep. My abs feel like they got an amazing workout, lol. It's like dry-heaving, only coughing instead of vomiting. Once it gets going, it only stops when my body physically can't cough again for a little while. It's so annoying!

And the soreness, oh my god. I'd trade a constant running nose over that anyday. I've had cough drops and cold meds and ibuprofen and I can still feel it everytime I swallow. If you wanna know just how often you swallow in a day, get a sore throat. You'll also find out how impossible it is to stop, even though you really really want to.

Good news is it feels like I'm on the down-swing of this rollercoaster. I hope so. I've missed two days of work because of this, plus two days prior of my weekend too. I'm tired of this crap. I'm no good when it comes to being sick.

Like many of you, I want to crawl into my bed and sleep until it heals. Only this time around, I haven't even been able to do that well!

@GoodOldDreamer I wish you the best of luck and a fast recovery!

I rarely get sick, but when I do I can usually basically ignore it and go about my day. When I actually get sick enough that it somewhat impairs my ability to function, it can hurt my ego a little bit. ^^' Basically whenever I'm sick I tend to be a bit in denial about it. Most of the time it can help me power through things, but sometimes I end up pushing myself too far and making things worse. Other than that, I can't say being sick affects the way I feel toward other people for the most part.

Update: So I tried to go to work this morning, managed to last about an hour before I couldn't do it anymore, and went to the ER at the hospital to get looked at. What I thought was a cold back on Wednesday turns out to be some sort of 'respiratory virus' that can take anywhere between a week or two to clear up.

Great.

Doc said to keep doing what I've been doing, using Dayquil during the day, and she gave me this codine cough syrup stuff to take at night to better help me sleep. She figured today or tomorrow would probably be my worst day and it should get better from here. I hope so. She gave me a doctor's note for work so there's that at least.

All in all, sounds like this is probably something similar to a cold that just hangs on longer. Best news though is that I don't have strep throat. Not that this thing is probably much better but still.

Just gotta wait this out a few more days I guess.
