I had a thought when the new EU directive with controversial articles was passed. It seems to already be happening to some extent. First was China with its firewall, but now Russia follows its track.

EU officials are getting anxious about the fact that the Internet and tech are dominated by the USA. It wasn't the issue before, when both sides were on the same boat, but both Germany and France have some dreams of making the EU into a new geopolitical superpower. Plans like European army are not aimed at Russia, but at the United States, whose presence is to be kicked from Europe. The trade war is to some extent aimed at Germany too.

To build such a power, Europe needs its Google, Facebook and its own data. You think that the Internet may fall apart into several regions hidden from each other? China,Russia, EU and USA + satellite states of each empire having their own networks?

Most likely not, but from what I know Russian, China and Japan seem to have their own internet search, marketplaces, chatrooms and people seem to have adopted them, therefore they are already isolated somewhat. I even heard, that Japan has their own Youtube alternative and I heard, that it kinda works out for them, unlike Dailymotion or Vimeo for us.

I can't really imagine united Europe to reach such thing. First of all as history has shown many countries can't tolerate each other enough and they separated into their own smaller countries, another thing is that Google, Youtube and etc aren't only strong in USA, they are strong globally and Europe can't do anything about that. Lastly, why I should ditch all those services? I have no reasons. And I forgot to mention, that certain countries are poor and wouldn't be interested in doing such things.

Lastly, I don't care about crazy dreams about making EU into superpower or something, because it doesn't matter simple people I guess. If politicians wanna do their own nonsense, they can, but they cannot expect others to like that.

BTW, what are those articles you are talking about? I'm out of touch with political news, but it looks like people turned them into memes.
