So, I don't know why but I've always had a problem with forum mods. (not on this site, but elsewhere. PERC has the best mods I've seen so far IMO) I understand that they must keep things orderly but sometimes they just like to take the power too far. Like, for example I was on this website called "Citydata" and I posted this topic asking what it would be like moving to a different city. So then another user comes in and she writes up a whole post about how negligent I am for asking such a question and how she hates tourists like me. I was very astounded and decided to be humorous and post a funny gif in reply to her:

Well, I guess she didn't like that too much (hypocrite) and wrote a long Private Message saying how she had contacted the moderator and she would be laughing when I got a warning. I thought that was really rude and cynical but rolled my eyes and moved on. Sure enough, the next day I got a warning from the Mod saying that I was WAY out of line for posting such a GIF. How dare I! :bored: I guess an poor INTP can't catch a break in this world.

Anyways, sorry for the long rant but my main question is: have you ever had similar experiences with moderators? Have you ever gotten a warning like I did?

I refuse to argue over forums. I think its pointless because most of the people that start hated debates would never do it face to face. I didn't find anything wrong with that reply. It was simply a quick "stfu" pic and it caught her off guard. Those type of replies are the BEST. Quick to the point and move on...

Yessum I likes our moderators too.
Yes....ours >:D

But yes, not everyone is fit to rule positions of responsibility and power.
Though I don't engage with people too much on here, I would say the times I have with moderators they have come off as rather well balanced individuals. So I imagine the selective nature for who becomes a moderator comes into play as not one of them seem to be bat shit insane people.

That GIF makes your text way harder to read

In the course of my teenage years, I was often appointed the role of mod or admin on various game forums of the game clans I belonged to. I can't recall abusing that power, but I most likely did some no-nos in terms of good forum mod practice.

The "corrupt" mods will always exist. The moral a forum's leadership will never be stronger than that derived from the forum authority's standards, i.e. the administrator's judgment in choosing his staff.

I disagree, you certainly seem to have at least caught a break from grammar lessons.

Nitpicking aside, I've been frequenting various forums for about a decade and surprisingly can't really recall any bad experiences with mods. But that's mainly because I typically behave myself on forums. I'm not saying you were in the wrong or anything, but I try not to post anything that can even be construed as an insult unless I make it super obvious it's a joke like that side-splitting witticism about grammar lessons. The only times I can recall getting warned by a mod was when I deserved it; a lot of the posts I made when I was 11-13 weren't exactly top notch quality.

Of course, part of the reason I don't have any "terrible mod" stories is that I typically lurk forums before I join. In other words, if I think a forum has overzealous mods who seem to have some sort of self-imposed daily quota for bans and warnings, I don't sign up.

Honestly, I think game server admins tend to be worse in terms of power abuse. I remember the funniest one was a few years ago a friend and I got banned from a CS:S server solely because we killed the admin several rounds in a row. He kept coming from the same place every time and was a pretty inept player (we weren't even that good, he was just way worse). I was banned from other servers for stupid reasons as well, but I think that was the worst of it.

It's best not to even bother or get angry,
There's little you can do,
Relish the cool Mods over here :)

I remember when I was on Yahoo Answers(Believe it or not there was a "community" there),
They would "Spam Monkey" you with warnings,
A troll would report you for no reason,
And for MUCH less than what you posted to that girl,
And the Mods on the site would actually ban you for months,
I mean I got banned once for nothing more than a spelling error that they seized an opportunity to misconstrue as!

I have to agree that PerC is a very civil forum.. The Mods here do (or don't do) something that makes this place very rare.. they don't try to control the culture or push their political agendas.. For the most part they stick to enforcing the rules.

Another forum I used to post on.. My former spouse told a Mod something quite silly and the moderators seemed to go crazy and they began a campaign of micro managing my every move to the point of harassment and eventually I told them to fuck off and tell me what their problem was or ban me.. Rather than tell me the truth about what their problem was.. They banned me.
They had a tendency to ban people based on their political stances.. It was OK to be a trolling cunt as long as you shared their ideals and beliefs.
Classy stuff.

I used to be a moderator on a site I made with my friends. We basically had rules that we never enforced, because the drama was kind of amusing. We had liars and people advertising even though it wasn't allowed and people using bad language even though we technically didn't allow that and people insulting each other.... (and one of the admins was constantly getting into fights and insulting one of the users, so I'd have had to ban both of them, but I couldn't ban an admin) PerC honestly seems a bit strict to me, but I haven't gotten into trouble as of yet, so it doesn't matter. Honestly, I used to lmao at the things people would say. I should never be in charge of anything. It would be total chaos with me laughing at everyone else.

Personally, i thought the gif was pretty funny... but you called her a whore, and it was obvious she had no sense of humor to being with. Of course she was going to bitch about it.

I also did the mod thing [not here] for five years. My favorite parts were (1) getting to know a lot more people (because they would interact with me) in a role where I was actually performing a task, so it's easier for me to socialize, (2) helping people who had problems / sharing information, and (3) making changes to the forum system (business process or actual functionality) to make the place better or more fun to be at.

The past I hated the most was playing "mom with a paddle" for people who couldn't figure out how to interact with each other. Your approach had to conform to the official forum policies; the policies had to be specific and identifiable; the policies had to cover a wide variety of situations, and let's face it, sometimes a simple ruleset don't fairly cover all the bases or ends up hosing people at the edges even if they catch a number of the situations they were meant to catch; etc. If you adjust to a situation and tailor the outcome, then people accuse you of favoritism; if you adhere to the strict letter of the law, then you're accused of being a policeman with little regard of someone's situation or little imagination; it's a no-win usually. Someone's always pissed off and convinced they didn't get a fair shake.

I can't speak for the staff at that place, maybe they do suck; but the problem with you putting a picture out calling someone a whore (even as humor) is that if they don't warn you, suddenly the next guy will post a less humorous picture truly calling someone a whore and then claim injustice if he is warned or infracted, and it'll be hard for the mod to defend themselves to some members, which then lessens faith in the staff.

Modding is just a PitA when it comes to disciplining people, at least on "open type" sites with a diversity of opinions and approaches. On the INTP sites, for example, you can usually get away with posting the craziest comments, insults, and images, and no one cares, because people are more offended by other things [such as "illogic in your posting style"] and don't take crassness or direct bitch-slapping nearly as personally as some other sites might.

.....

Oh, I'll say I've never had an issue on the other 5-6 sites I've frequented where I haven't modded. I don't think I've even gotten an infraction. I guess I just figure out what the forum culture is like and then live in it.

Absolutely! I usually don't post such images but it was a gut instinct. XD I guess I just thought that it was unjust that she posted saying "Oh great, another out-of-towner, why don't you get out and work in the real world, sweetie. Some of us don't get to sit in a pretty little office all day filing our nails." and got no warning but when I post my gif it is the end of all days!

Yeah, I see where you're coming from there, and I've seen it on other forums too.

What typically happens is that as long as you avoid something specific and recognizable, you can sometimes slip by the rules. *doh* If she had called you a stupid bitch, she would have been warned, most likely; instead she could be as demeaning as possible while not quite calling you a name, even if you're pretty sure she was thinking it.

...But it's like trying to legislate the definition of porn. On forums, that ends up being "no female nipples, and no genitalia for anyone."

I once considered joining city-data forum. I even went as far as creating a username (can't remember what it was). Anyway, I was browsing through the "Entertainment" forum where they were discussing tv shows, I almost put in my 2 cents when there was this one member continously attacking and insultiing almost everyone who commented. This went on for several pages before the moderator decided to close down the thread. I mean, really? Where the hell were the moderators by the third page? And don't get me started on the "Relationships" forum. People are genuinely asking about the best ways to meet a significant other or the best places to meeet for a first date. The first few replies are helpful, but by the 5th reply comes the put-downs, insults and other cruel remarks.

Also, City-Data is a breeding place for trolls.

I've had a few bad experiences. One forum I got banned from for a few reasons, one being was the admins pet member took a dislike to me and started saying nasty stuff about me to the mods and did all sorts of stuff I won't even go into (Raichan knows what forum I'm talking about) then when that admins pet member triggered me massively by making a comment in PM about no one likes you midnightstar and everyone wants you to get banned I completely freaked out and sure enough she got the admin to ban me for being mentally ill

Another forum I got an infraction on, my "crime" was helping the newbies settle in.

Another forum I got a telling off because I was apparently reporting spammer profiles wrongly but none of the mods had told me how I was supposed to report them even when I asked so I left that forum.

Oh and a while ago I got warned along with a few others just for having fun on a thread that was designed for members to have fun on, we were just making silly comments and making each other laugh and no-fun mod decided to get involved and warn most of the forum *shakes head* I rarely visit there now

JoanCrawford,

I actually signed up with this forum just to reply to this post of your's, that's how much I wanted to speak out about this!~ XD ^_^

I know exactly what you mean, I never thought it would happen to me but I seem to be a refugee victim of a Moderator abusing their power, they're not even real moderators all of them are appointed Moderators VOLUNTEER POSTERS except for 2 who are called "Senior Moderators" these are the ACTUAL Administrators of the City Data Forums.~

Recently, I have no idea why but Poncho_NM of City-Data Forum seems to have developed a vendetta against me recently and has been harassing me, his first few claims were credible, but recently he is just flying off the handle at the slightest indication things seem to be annoying him.~

Basically no matter how credible I am and polite, if I disagree with him even just a little bit it he gives me Infractions and closes my threads.~ Even when a post I make has no insulting nature to it at all, if I respond in any way at all to some one even if we're having a polite non-argumentive conversation, he will say it does and give me an Infraction and, yes, close my threads.~

I've had little choice but to report him to both of his Senior Moderators (actual administrators), I already reported him once to one Senior Moderator but to no effect not even a reply from the Senior Moderator, this time I reported him to BOTH the Senior Moderators with 2 Private Messages to them both with evidence of his unfounded Infractions and his harassment of me.~

I've also told him I did this and I suspect he will ban me now, as he behavior seems to be increasingly neurotic.~ Oh well, I was getting tired of that forum any ways, I used to love it, but with his constant harassment my love of that forum has soured considerably.~

...But it's like trying to legislate the definition of porn. On forums, that ends up being "no female nipples, and no genitalia for anyone."
I take issue with that kind of policy, why should I be subjected to seeing a Man's nipples and not a Woman's nipples?~ How is this not blatantly sexist discrimination towards women?~ If they are going to ban nudity, then please do so for every one, please don't make exceptions for men: I've seen plenty of half-naked men and some have had bigger breasts than many women I have ever seen, yet they are allowed to walk around like that in places where women are not simply for the fact that they are men, if that is not the definition of sexism then I don't know what is.~

Sure, ban male nipples and massive moobs too.
I don't much care either way, tbh.

Ah, the glory of Western culture.

to OP: that person really needs to get a life (or to expand the one they have).

OT: the only message i can remember getting was to change my avatar... but, not too big of a deal when it comes down to it.

I don't mean to sound mean, but it seems a lot of people who have difficulty making up their minds and taking direction of their own life tend to gather to City Data forums in addition to releasing their suppressed emotions upon the first person they notice on the forums in the most negative way possible.~

Or is that just the definition of insecure people using the internet in general?~
