How do you fall asleep?

Ok, so I've noticed a bunch of people here have said that they create little stories and scenarios in their heads when they're trying to fall asleep. Is this something that you do deliberately? Or is something that just happens?

I fall asleep by letting my thoughts spin out of control - I let them go wherever they want (which, as you can imagine, is not necessarily helpful if I'm thinking about something painful or unpleasant - those are the nights when I tend not to fall asleep at all). In that jungle of thoughts, my mind often plays out weird scenarios or re-imagines events in the last day or so. There is nothing deliberate about it however.

So -
First: how do you fall asleep?
Second: if you create these quasi-daydream scenarios, is it on purpose as a tactic to fall asleep or is something that just happens?
Third: how long does it usually take you to fall asleep?

Man, I also envy you guys who can sleep to music. I also need complete silence when trying to sleep.

I actually will make frequent trips to the bathroom if I'm in an uncomfortable situation and need to get away for awhile.
I did this all the time when I was a kid. There was this super crowded and suffocating family restaurant we went to a lot. I get away, I would spend most my time in the washroom. It was an oasis - it was really clean and empty (which is odd for a women's washroom) and they had this awesome couch. No one one would notice that I would disappear for like an hour (this place had a lot of games so nobody questioned my absence).

Which is really annoying if you live in a place with creaky floorboards or with people who play loud music late at night

It just kind of happens. I don't really think of anything but what I need to do before falling asleep. Sometimes I have music going. Sometimes I think "why the hell can't I fall asleep?" when I'm trying to go to sleep earlier than usual, even though I know the reason why. lol

I can't stand hearing sounds besides my own. Neighbors playing loud music at night drives me nuts too.

same. I could never manage falling asleep with the tv running or music playing. That kind of stuff just makes me want to stay up so i can see how it ends or listen to the whole song!

I usually have a few ongoing stories that I play through my head as I'm falling asleep. I try to get really into the main character's emotions and feel them like i was experiencing them myself. The closer i get to sleep, the more real my story world feels until reality fades away and I'm asleep. The stories seem to make for a nice transition from the waking world to the world of my dreams.

I sleep with my window open so I fall asleep to the sounds outside, which is just how I like it. ;) I usually fall asleep in a matter of minutes too, which they say is bad, but I've always been that way, so whatever. The interesting part of the question, though, is what I fall asleep to in my head. It's usually some scenario from the day remixed into nonsense, or it's a completely ordinary scene that ends up with nonsense dialogue. If I ever wake up in the middle of that stage, I'm like, Why tf were we talkinf about that?? But these dreams that segue into sleep just happen; I've always found it interesting how they start out as normal thoughts and then spiral into weirdness the deeper into sleep I go.

I haven't seen anyone else say this yet so I'll throw it out there. I got real interested in therapeutic self hypnosis in high school so that's how I fall asleep. I stare at something in my room until my eyelids can't stay open anymore. Then I imagine going to a place that's really relaxing, like a pool by the beach. I'll try to imagine every detail. Before I know it, I'll be asleep and having vivid and/or lucid dreams.

I've tried music, it works okay but I prefer silence. I've tried the TV trick too, but the way the light flashes keeps me awake or keeps me in really light sleep.

For me I usually Lay down and listen to music for awhile then have to turn it off. I always have to sleep On my stomach ,well unless I have someone to cuddle with : )
It takes me awhile to fall asleep I sit there and think about all sorts of things Most of the time I'll play out some scenerio involving someone else usually someone i'm into at the time. I think a lot about Love and other things,I think about memories I think about how it felt when....
It takes me so long to fall asleep to be honest I used to masterbate before so I COULD fall asleep:blushed:
If I didn't I would be up pacing back forth or tossing and turning untill I finally got tired enough.
