It depends what kind of friends you want.
Do you want someone to share intimate thoughts with? Or someone that you have a hobby/interests in common so you can share knowledge? Someone you can share an activity with (e.g.: playing chess, a sport or solving puzzles or stargazing)?

Do you want an extrovert friend or an introvert? Introverts are harder to befriend but the relationship can get more intimate and profound quicker. An extrovert is very easy to befriend, you just have to get along and share just a small passion, but it can feel shallow sometyikes (it's sometimes +yikes, I just invented this word now, don't worry). Spend time with the extrovert + friends -> meet more people -> meet even more people -> win(?).

The results depend on the amount of energy/time you want to spend with that.

Did you try to befriend a colleague? Or other people while doing your leisure activities?

but I have a hard time making new friends
Do you find it hard to talk to people? Or, are you afraid of rejection? Or, are you afraid that the friendship might not be one that you are searching for?
The least you expect, the more friends you make.
In order to make friends, you just have to talk. It depends on the situation. Sometimes that talk might be some gossip, sometimes it might be some serious scientific topic. If you can initiate the talking and talk freely, you would make friends easily.

Edit : If you have some unique quality like you are extremely beautiful or anything that can make people jealous, then making friends is going to be the most difficult thing for you in the world. If that's the case, then you better not try to make any friends.
