Found these 4 Keyhole Limpets at Long Key. They naturally grow with a lil hole in the top for various life processes......... I think they look like lil itty bitty teeny tiny volcanoes.

Today's word of the day is Operculum:
Basically its the "trap door" on a gastropod mullusk that closes up the animal inside the shell. When the animal retracts inside the shell the operculum is the trap door that is all thats seen from the outside.

The brown somewhat oblong shaped object here in this picture of this live lightening whelk is its Operculum. Why I'm writing about this is because I have found 2 of them washed up on the beach to a couple large Gastropods. See next 2 pictures.

Above is the operculum to a lighting whelk (I'm holding it upside down) that is about the size of the live one shown in the upper picture. The operculum below is a very large one almost the size of my hand and I'm guessing its from a huge Horse Conch.

These are amazing finds and I'm fortunate to even recognise what they were when I saw them lying on the shore. The one to the lighting whelk I found about month ago while at Lover's Key and the Horse Conch operculum I found at Long Key Beach last week.
Thats todays lesson on gastropod anatomy. Haha

How bout this find? Don't always find kool shells at the beach. Sometimes its really something totally unexpected like this really old cork top medicine bottle from late 1890's, I believe after researching the embossed company name on the bottle.
I noticed the corner of glass in the mud while launching my kayak and while i don't usually give much attention to glass this particular piece I thought larger than most and thinking it was part of a broken liquor bottle and mud buried from who knows what storm/hurricane I started to dig it up to throw it away and this awesome old bottle is what I found.
Edit: found at Long Key Beach.

At most beach parks you'll see squirrels running around but at Delnor-Wiggins, near Naples Florida, well its raccoons and I knew I could count on always running into some of my old friends hangin around the trash.........

Lightenning Whelk courtship: I observed these 2 lightenning whelks frum the walkway bridge at Lovers Key beach. Observed them for about 2 hours frum when they were about 30 feet apart crawling across the bottom till they well finally got together. The larger one is about 13" and the smaller one about 10".

As promised frum the "Photos of INTJ's" thread this is the more in depth follow up re the below photo.

Yeah, in general I prefer that most people straight up leave me the fuk alone but on occasion there are rare exceptions of persons who approach me while I'm on top of my truck groovin to my tunes and enjoyin the beach. Such is the case of the 2 amazing young women pictured above who started a conversation with me a month or so back while I was at Bahia Honda Beach in the Florida Keys.
Sorta ended up hangin out with them for some of 2 days while there and it was both great time & great conversation. The one is originally from north of Chicago and the other from Long Island NY. Both of these gals have degrees from University of Tampa , BS Marine Biology and the one works at the Sea Turtle Research station and the other at the Dolphin Marine mammal station. So yeah, they are both well educated great gals who scientifically and humanistically give a damn about our environment, the wildlife on our planet as well as its oceans and its human interaction. We spent all of our time talking about Humanity's future here on earth and how we as a species need to learn more about not just the earth's environment but the human interaction with the oceans and to learn all we can for the advancement of the Human Condiiton in that regard.
What an absolute great time the 3 of us had and after they did some snorkeling & sun bathing they requested some publicity shots and I happily obliged - see above - haha.
Amazing young women and what a pleasure from me to hang out & converse with them; 2 great well educated young gals who definately have their acts together............

Haven't given a travel update for over a month..............
28 Dec I left the Keys because the keys are crazy enough anyway without giving everyone a reason to raise hell like New Year's. SOooo he gown!
I went back up to the Marco Island/Naples/Bonita Springs area for a couple weex and then returned to the Keys after all the New Years tourist crap was over. Spent several days there doing what I do - mostly kayakin' , actually and then left again and spent a couple days hangin out at Big Cypress & The Everglades..........
After that went back to Bonita Springs/Naples exploring the low tide mud flats & estuaries around Lover's Key and today I've left and returned to Florida's Atlantic Ocean coast cause , well i got bored with the Gulf side.
Atlantic Coast for awhile now - maybe the rest of winter as temps are in mid 70's.
Ciao...........intjonny
