From what my mom says about her childhood, there are some things that are better about this time.

Parents, I think. Also the internet. Kids just don't read enough anymore. I don't know if it's just where I live, but there sure were a lot of dumb shits at my high school.

The thing about that is that it could easily be true of high schools before the modern age.

There were statistics that said there were a lot of dumb-shits at your school?!
You were using that to support the idea that there's something wrong with kids in the modern age.

I think Steve should elaborate a little...

Haha I was using current reading statistics to prove my point that kids aren't as well rounded as they used to be. But I agree, he should elaborate.

When I started high school about five years ago, I was expecting awesome parties, skating with friends, girls, drugs, homework, hardass teachers, skipping school, football games that never ended, dancing, driving around going stupid doo doo dumb during lunch break. I was expecting all the shit that was fed to me by all the movies and TV I watched.

When I got to high school, I realized nothing it like that, at all. A few years later, I look at my high school career and realize how it wasn't anything like I expected. And I look at the coming freshman, and wonder what they expect high school to be like?

I look around, and this what I see. I notice... damn, kids aren't growing like they used to. They're... small. I look around some more, and notice... wow, these 13 year old girls are wearing miniskirts, adult underwear, more makeup than the seniors do. I notice... the boys are walking around acting tough, wearing all the "designer" stuff they can wear. And I notice, that these twerps have probably never lifted a finger to get anything in their life. Not that they're rich by any means, material items are so easy to come by and so abundant, that everyone has something. But if you don't have the right thing, you're not as good as the others.

The year I left my high school, there were three girls coming from middle school who were pregnant. Five more this year. My girlfriend who's a senior at the school tells me the freshmen are incredibly worse than they were when I was there. This is a major social problem that people are not recognizing.

I don't even want to get started with what the kids are watching in todays television. Hannah Montana? I don't think I've seen a bigger slut transform from children's eyesights since Britney Spears.

Do you know of self fulfilling prophecies?

Kids rebelling and being lazy isn't anything new. I'm my sociology class last summer our professor read to us a few sentences from a historical document it was something along the lines of this. My son, you spend your time idly. Not helping us in the fields. What must I do to motivate you. Then my professor asked us when we thought that it was written. Most people said anything from the 1800s- the 50s. I said biblical times. It was written in like 320 ad. We can take comfort in the fact that this has always happened and civilization hasn't collapsed yet.

That's true, and I've thought of this before. And it seems with every generation gap, there is one or several significant sources of information and material the kids leach from that the parents really have no insight on. Music, television, magazines, school, friends, etc. But one thing that this generation has that no other has had, is the internet. The internet, the no-mans land of information, when you need not be physically present to gather all the information in the world. Where you can be social without being present.

I'm a kid myself, but my mental age is beyond what I see in my peers. I've grown up around mostly older people, adults and grandparents teaching me and telling me their stories. I've worked with many adults in labor fields and learned how to build things, and why things are done in certain ways.

I've also reeked havoc in my own ways, rebelled against everything my house-mates have stood for, and done my fair share of drugs and substance. And all I can say, is we have a lot of really really stupid kids in our schools right now.

Yeah, but the 50's had rock and roll and they turned out fine! The only thing that could be detrimental to them I think is the easy access of porn. Other than that I really don't think it will be that big of a deal.

You obviously haven't ventured far into the internet. Middle class, has a teenage child, I bet you even live on the good side of town, no? Or maybe your kids are long grown and they are now having kids who must be defended.

Porn, yes, our countries worst addiction, that's exactly what will drive our country down. The ever growing amount of pedophiles and sexual predators on the internet will make good due with your children. Or maybe the ever lasting slandering of our government's leaders by half-witted know it alls will fall into it's own self fulfilling prophecy, imploding it from the inside. Or maybe, just maybe, that one special website your child seems to love so much, you know, the one where they can instantly communicate with anyone in the whole world? The one where your child spends their time on most, where 50 million people you don't know can talk to them, without your presence? The one where large corporate special interests advertise their "marketing strategies", in the worlds largest and growing communications medium, that has only been around for, oh, say, twenty years?

Yeah, you tell me were not in for a shit storm, and I'll explain to you how it happened.

50's music
Speak-easys
Mc hammer
2 pice swim suites

Phones/cell phones

manson

All of that stuff and more have sent people into a tizzy! Yet we are here and kicking. I just don't see the big deal.

Were you raised in an attic?
50's music is hardly noticed when compared with 60s, 70s, and 80s music. Even to present times. Granted a lot of it was beautiful, deep, and magical, it still was a big support in the heroin kick in the 70s.

Speak-easys were a good thing, wtf are you talking about?

Mc hammer, the only black rapper to sell a bajillion records to suburbia white kids, become rich, then blow it all on producing more shitty records. The guy was in a Christian group for crying out loud.

2 piece swimsuits, really? Do you live in the south by any chance? Maybe you should be more concerned with the "accidental" topless bikini shots your high school mate has on her facebook.

Television, yes, the first level of visual communication around the world. The porn industry turns a new leaf, and sitcoms begin telling us how our lives should be lived.

Cell phones! Now you are on to something. I should have mentioned before, cell phones are a big playing factor in this concept. I swear, if I find another twelve year-old with a cell phone, I'm going to break it, and kick their parents ass for being retarded. I just googled "sexting", and within three clicks I found an underage girl completely naked. Red hair and freckles, predators love gingers.

Manson? you mean Marilyn Manson? He's nothing more than a outsider showing us insiders how outsiders do things. Crazy guy, crazy music, crazy followers... but he's not really taken seriously in urban culture. You should be worried about Miley Cyrus, and her poll dancing episodes at the teen choice awards.

You aren't really listening to what I was saying. Let me try it this way. When those things started or were happening people freaked out! They don't anymore. They got used to it. They thought when those things were happening or new that it was going to lead us to destruction or some such nonsense. But those things happened and people got over them. I was using them to make a comparison to the internet. It's a newer thing and people still think it's the devil(using that term lightly). In a few few years no one will care or think that. Does that make sense?

Let me elaborate with the 2 pice that's a good one. People thought when they first started that it was completely indecent for women to wear such things. The groundwork for the modern bikini began to be laid in 1907, when Australian swimmer and performer Annette Kellerman was arrested on a Boston beach for wearing a form-fitting one-piece swimsuit. She was arrested wearing a ONE pice! But you don't hear about stuff like that happening in the US anymore because we have become more modern. Understand?

Seriously, can someone else interject here? I feel like I'm arguing with my grandma.

The only thing I don't understand is where you come from, because it's obviously not anywhere with urban culture.

"When those things started or were happening people freaked out!"
Do you disagree with them? People "freak out" for a reason my dear. Two piece suits are only good for being different than one piece users. In the future, I bet women wear three piece suits, a cup on each nip and a washcloth for the hiney, not that it isn't boiling down to that already.

You're obviously missing my point here, which is completely understandable. I've been conjuring this argument for a few years now. The world pre- cell phones and internet allowed only one-way communication into the family's home, which was television and radio and such. Meaning the parents (if they were competent enough) could control their kid's ways of thinking by controlling what kind of media they consumed. (this is why urban culture grew faster than rural areas, because a lot of fucking people got together and said "hey! we dont give a fuck! we do what we want!") The world after, or during cell-phones and the internet, gives anyone with the proper tools, which incredibly easy to come across now-a-days, access to 1-2-3(unlimited)-way communication between everyone in the world, at any give time.

Do you know what chat-roulette is?

Okay, whatever. Don't ever take a sociology class you'll probably fail. However you would probably learn a lot. Good luck with arguing about the pointless!

That's interesting. I don't think I've ever won an argument with an ENTJ before. My grandma usually punishes me or walks away when I get close to pwning her.

Goodnight, sleep tight, it was a good fight. Thank you, I appreciate your words.
