Leaving it all behind.

In a month or so a friend and I are going to pack up my car with only our most precious possessions and go out into the world with a sparse itinerary and no plans for a return date. We both feel stuck inside our own heads and dissatisfied with life. Maybe the answer is somewhere out there on the road. Anybody else ever want to do this? Anybody do it?

I've done it. It was a good thing. Helped me figure myself out.

Sounds refreshing and fun :) Those things can give you needed perspective and should throw many unexpected experiences your way. Wake up the senses and the mind.

Wish I had a car. I'd do the same. I've left most everything behind about every two years and moved somewhere else. Not running from anything (which people will always bring up lol) - just a wanderer of sorts, blazing my own path.

I'll be doing something similar very soon.

Best wishes on your journey.

You have no idea how much I'd like to do such a thing. =/ Possibly alone or with a very very close friend. My daily life feels so ordinary and barren, traveling and just being in a different and unusual environment, could add some magic and meaning in life.
i did it as well, but returned home a year and a half later...good luck!
I did that eight years ago and I am so glad I did. I had no problem stepping into the unknown.

I wish you all the best!

Now what are you doing?! I feel like this could turn into a "wehre are they now?"

I am thinking of the next place I want to go to.

Alaska. That would be awesome.

I agree :)

I am not sure where we will go from here. We were displaced eight months ago after a house fire. I am ready to move on from here but my SO has a lot of fears about leaving. I can't see myself staying here permanently.

Thanks for all the responses. It seems like everyone I talk to says that they wish they could just head out into the unknown as well. I wonder why so few people actually do it.
I would spend my whole life doing this if I thought it were feasible. I just don't know how I'd survive. I don't want to worry about where I'll get my next meal.

I fantasize constantly about doing this, but I haven't taken action yet. Having a car and a little more cash would probably help, but I've considered going by foot/train. Living alone like this for an extended period of time is also very appealing and it is becoming a necessity. When I think of a place I'd spend some of my time, that would be Washington State (Northwest) Western Canada and Oregon.
I think I would totally do this if only I had a partner in crime.

Let us know how it goes. :]
Just a thought, but it would be hilarious if, in our attempt to self-isolate, we all end up in the same random forest in the northwestern portion of North America. Awkward . . .

That sounds amazing! I'd love to do that, but the car situation is a problem, and I don't really have any friends.........

I've thought about that. I think I would rather worry about where my next meal is coming from than worry about losing my mind. Maybe some real problems and crisis are just what I need to put all of my neurotic problems and crisis in perspective. Of course, reality may reveal this thought to be purely romantic. We shall see.
