Im throwing a cocktail party for my birthday and inviting a few close friends, i want to make sure that not only have a dotted all my I's but that its not too boring! Most of my friends are introverted and if they are looking to me for entertainment past providing the alcohol id like to be as ready as possible. Any suggestions on entertainment? should i keep it simple with just conversation and light music? games, a movie? what do you social butterflies suggest?

You seem to have a selective few for your party, which is a great idea for any party. I recommend playing charades for breaking ice, but some may be too shy to play. However, the ones that do play will have a great time. The ones that even sit out will enjoy the show. :) Have someone write down what people are charading or have a theme with it....once I played geography charades with countries. :)

The parties that I've had have usually been pretty great without grandiose themes or decor. Some music playing may give folks something to talk about, and I recommend keeping games simple and easy so everyone can enjoy the people at the party with talking and conversation not solely focus on a complicated game (Risk, Monopoly even).I personally don't usually like movies at parties as much unless it's in the background. It's fun if people talk over the hilariously bad movie or a movie everyone knows and loves.

I think shykind has a good view on this. . . simple is better. Especially for casual parties. . . =)

I'd say other ideas for games could be:

Catchphrase
Pictionary
Blurt
If a small party, card games usually are fun. . . [like rummy, spades, hearts, crazy eight, even the old maid. =P]

My new favorite of all-time is totally Monopoly deal that just came out. It's a monopoly game played with cards. It's a whole lot of fun. =)

Hope this helps some. =)
