Need advise on reprogramming my brain, at least for a few hours

Here is my situation. I am a paramedic. Everyday I see patients that I must attempt to make better. My intuition combined with all 5 of my senses mix together to tell me what is going on and whether or not to be worried. This works extremely well for me, at least until now that I want to move up. This involves an interview where I am given a patient care scenario and must 'work through it'. I find myself asking What is he really asking? What does he want me to figure out?. What is the angle here? Lets try factoring in body language. Crap Im taking to long now I look like an idiot .....[BRAIN: OVERLOADED AND WAY OFF BASE]

As a medic I work just fine under high pressure intense situations but this interview is way out of my comfort level. I have narrowed the problem down to this. When dealing with a patient in real life I take it all in and I guess my subconscious provides the answer, but now I have to talk my through the same thing having to ask for each detail. How do you ask someone what level of fear you see in someones eyes? Its not text book but it definitely helps.

Any other INFJs experienced a similar problem or am I just...[??]

Maybe explaining your method to the person will help them to better understand how you operate in the field and will show that you are assertive enough to explain it and provide evidence and stats to back it up.

Think of a patient scenario you have been in similar to the one they present you and talk through what you did?

I suspect other INFJs have difficulty verbally expressing what their brain knows within the span of a short moment.

But consider this. If you didn't do what you do (pick up the emotional clues), do you think being merely told about it instead of having experienced it would be adequate? I think the gap between the theory and the practice, even if the theory accurately represents it, is a... a world apart, shall we say?

Imagine if you lived in a world that didn't pick any emotional clues, and then a visitor from outside it tried to describe a world of emotional clues to you. Even if they did a good job, that alone would hardly make you proficient or necessarily able to comprehend their meaning.

Or not.

Exactly
Based from what I have encountered with INFJs so far, a lot of them seem to continue to struggle with that issue of communication, which isn't to say they fail at it or will always fail at it. Just that it remains an issue of interest to them... that it doesn't seem to go away. An ongoing struggle, even if that struggle eventually becomes a smaller deal.

Now, if you are describing you ability to pick up on less common abilities like insightful listening to emotional clues beyond merely how society superficially categorizes them, not only are you attempting to overcome communication, but you will probably find it difficult to get people who are talented at communication but know what you are actually talking about. Which probably makes it all the more difficult, because relying on the talent of allies is usually a quick and relatively painless alternative.

I am fairly sure I know the basics about what you are trying to talk about, but teaching someone how to pick up those skills and use them seem... like a considerable challenge. Even if I was up to the task, I'd need a pretty good student or I'd think it would have rather... slow prospects of success, if at all.

I get the feeling that if I try to explain all this it would only hurt my chances. So really that only leaves me with learning to get through the scenario as a new skill altogether. The step by step approach that they are looking for. Will take practice.
I think what you describe is just true of introverts in general, but especially intuitives who are really use to just operating off instinct and hunches. Its very difficult to concretize something that is inherently ephemeral. It's like asking Picasso to explain his methods so there is I think a valid frustration if that's what you're being asked to do.

As far as reprogramming your brain in a certain way, maybe you should look into something like NLP. I don't know how effective it is, but many of the ideas there I think are pretty coherent. There's a couple of great books (you can probably find online). One called Sleight of Mouth which is about getting people's mind to operate in a different way by changing underlying belief structures (Robert Dilts entire lecture might be available on YouTube or torrent) and also Phoenix: Therapeutic Patterns of MIlton Erickson is an oft-recommended book on the subject. That's not so much a biography of Erickson so much as a look at how he would employ certain techniques to get people's minds to change. It's really a goldmine with regards to helping you see things in a different way and doesn't get into all the hypnosis and stuff that Erickson was known for. I got a cheap copy on Amazon. For anyone trying to change a habit or a belief those would be among the top picks out there I think.

awesome i will check these out. Thank you.
It is almost funny. We are trying to pass on our skills that make us relatively useful or special in order to by a degree make us redundant.

Why not just relish in the glory of being difficult to replace? You know, aside from the part there is no glory if no one realizes it is there and appreciates it.

But even if they did appreciate it, it probably wouldn't be worth glory. It is just a part of life we didn't ask for nor really is a moral or intellectual credit any more than possessing an arm or toe is. You have it not on your accord, but what is the point of celebration?

So if standing above and beyond others doesn't bring glory... do we need to rethink our ego complexes? If our systems of improving our self worth are innately flawed? Darn.

Haha.

Ah life, how you sometimes mock our efforts and practices.
