I happened to find this article just now, and it seems quite interesting:

In short, Dr Nardi puts forward a framework where there are 4 stages to function development in one's life. Stage 4 is the ultimate 'zen' like usage of a cognitive process, and only seems to be achieved in the dominant function of a type after reaching mid-late adulthood. The rest of the functions develop in a sort of 'staggered' formation throughout life. Presumably, external factors may act as a catalyst to this development.
