I've always thought a good way to get to know someone is to find out all about their musical tastes.

I hate trying to explain my tastes just by bands I like because often I find only 1 or 2 songs that I adore from a band and the rest I might not care about. I'm a stickler for quality and way too many bands have lots of filler songs. Most of my iPhone is filled with a ton of artists and most of them just have 1-5 songs each except for a select few (Muse, Billy Joel, Elton John, Stabbing Westward, etc.). It is way easier for me to list off different songs.

So I thought it would be fun to pick out up to 50 songs from my collection that best describe my musical taste across the spectrum and wanted to see what everyone else had. Narrowing it down to 10 or 20 songs felt like I was really not giving an accurate image of all the kinds of music I listen to, and anything more than 50 is just extraneous.

Some rules, ideas, and other things worth mentioning:

1) This is not about bands. I'd encourage listing multiple songs from the same band/artist to show that band has a bigger influence on you than others, but ultimately the point is to show how varied your musical taste is, not just what you love the most. I have a few songs listed where I don't necessarily like or listen to most of the artist's work. Santana is the most prevalent example for me; I don't like most of his music or his sound at all but one of the two songs of his that I like is on here because it blows me away. I also wouldn't call myself a Boz Scaggs fan at all but I've always loved Lido Shuffle. The purpose is just to convey the type of sounds and genres of music you like, not specific artists.

2) I'm trying to keep it accessible to most people unless there is a really deep track that I just have to list. I don't know how many people will have heard Back To You by Pleasure, but it has such a unique sound and feel that really appeals to me so I had to list it.

3) Some artists/songs I might not listen to nearly as often as others, but I'll throw in 1 or 2 songs from the same genre just to show I have some interest in it. I rarely listen to Eminem or any rap anymore and could have easily replaced his song with another classic rock song, but I threw in one of his just to show that I appreciate some rap from him and a select few other artists from time to time.

4) The list doesn't have to be in any kind of order unless you want it to be, but it is probably safe to assume that at least the top 10-15 on my list are in some kind of order to show they are some of my favorites  Stockholm Syndrome and Funeral For a Friend are definitely my favorite and second favorite songs respectively. Much of the rest is just jumbled though.

5) 50 is just the max. If 5 songs are enough to explain your musical taste, then only list 5.

6) I would link the songs to YouTube videos, but I think the forum would take over and embed all 50 videos in my post which would just be ridiculous. But I will definitely copy and paste every song I don't know into YouTube to give it a listen in hopes that I find something new that I like

7) By the end of your list, other people should have a pretty good idea of your range of musical tastes, and I'm also trying to accurately represent how much of a particularly genre I listen to by ratio. Even though I like some rap, classical, instrumental, pop, etc., it will be obvious that the majority of my interest is in rock.

8) If you have any suggestions of music you think I might like but not be aware of, feel free to message me about it or post or something. I love finding new music and love talking about it with people

Muse - Stockholm Syndrome

I wasn't exposed to many types of music for a long time. It's really only been in recent years I've collected any music of my own, so I often hide my tastes... I'd say I listen to "feel-good" (cheery, danceable) and "feel-something" music. I can definitely appreciate well-written lyrics, but the sound is what hooks me.

I admit I'm way to lazy (i'll claim don't' have time) to type out 50 of my tops songs.

But you can check out my last.fm..its pretty accurate I'd say: Last.fm - click here

In general, I like bands than individual songs, pretty sure my last fm reflects that. But I do agree, music definitely reflects personality.

It's funny seeing so many bands or songs I had to pass up listing coming up in other peoples' lists.

Equally exciting and terrifying seeing so many songs I don't know that I'm going to have to spend all day looking up them all tomorrow though  Thanks for all the awesome responses

*gasps for breath* Whaoh.... I never realized how much music I enjoyed until I created this list... I'd add more, but feel I likely have already added too much to begin with, and additionally have come to notice how mixed my taste in music truly is :) .

I also just happened to realize I forgor to add Evanescence within this, which likely would make the list twice as long...
