Have you ever found a song that feels like "you."?
I want to introduce the idea of a sound selfie and also tell you about Saami Joiks which are basically sound portraits of natural things/features like "the wind" or are portraits of people. This is a cultural thing for Saami people to create sound portraits.

There's a song that I recently realized I feel is "my soul" and this dose feel like quite something to share here, but I'm interested if other people have found what is "them".

My friend/sister-in-law texted me the other day with "Listening to Sanvean, thinking of you." Sanvean is a song by our mutual favorite band, so I wondered if she knew this particular song goes deeper for me.
I wrote, "I have been thinking lately that song is like my soul. Do you get that/see that?"
She wrote back, "I know it's you."

So, this is my soul, served up very vulnerably:

Here are three examples of Saami Joiks. I love this concept so much. Look how personally meaningful this is. It seems to me like these are often created after someone close to you dies. But I think it feels like they "come" to someone.
This first one, excuse the fact that it was on Sweden's got talent, but it's actually a fantastic introduction to understanding this song.
Sofia Jannok is an extremely precious spirit in my opinion. If you want to explore this more, look up her music video of her joik "Irene". Irene must have been a very happy person.
And listen to how Jon Henrik tells us about his father. I feel like I know exactly how his father is.
I also love composers who just naturally create portraits. Beethoven, for instance, was amazing at portraits, his favorite thing to play "Andante favori" was a portrait of his love, Josephine Brunsvik. I honestly think when I hear it that this is about her and her small children, myself, who he spent time with most every day for years but it also chants her name in the opening melody and throughout. " Jo-se-phin-a, Jo-se-phin-a" Yeah, other composers were good at this too, but for me Beethoven is just amazing for portrait painting.

Paste your "Joiks" =)

I first heard Bulat Okudzhava when I was 17, instant soul-recognition. Have never encountered anyone like him. Leonard is good, but more carnal and less eternal. He is my age in this, and to quote Leonard ... we're ugly but we have the music.

Sadness is the eternal companion of love.

I like this one. Is it all of his songs, or this song in particular.
You bring up age. Do you still feel that his songs are you even though you found it when 17?

I realized my Sanvean song is still me, but was much more me a year ago.

My theme song:

This song has a lot to do with the words on this one. That the words and music really fit and form a theme that suits. So I don't think this one would change.

Most of them. This isn't my #1 pick, but there are only a few live performances of his on YouTube. Some of his songs are more ... social I guess, more focused on people coming together and being stronger united than alone. I relate less to those, although they are more popular in Russia. I like his more individual, maybe a bit more obscure songs.

No change at all. I knew he was different the first time I heard him, and my appreciation for him has only deepened with the years. I didn't understand initially why I liked him so much, and being very young, I assumed there might be others out there that I'd like equally much. That has turned out not to be the case.

Said like an Ne dom looking through a library and finding a favorite at a young age that they keep coming back to. =) Exactly like.
That's the kind of book you marry. Okay, song. Anyway, that's it exactly.

@Red Panda You posted Tool's Lateralus!?!?!?! I like you.
And Skyrim? :blushed:
:kitteh:
Lateralus is one of my fav albums of all times, been listening to it for 15 years
now I'm learning some of the riffs on the guitar too, but I'm a total noob so it's going slow :p

Skyrim has the best soundtrack in a game I've listened so far. It's my go-to relaxing music

@ai.tran.75. That makes so much sense! Like I totally get that that song is you and it added to what I know of you.

@Paulie.
I can imagine you doing your work or cutting a hedge... small persistent acts but that also bring freedom and joy. I feel this way when I swim, I think. Freedom of motion buoying me up. It’s very stress-relieving in my opinion. Activity that is also stress-relieving to do...

A penny for your thoughts on that.

@Fru2. Googoo dolls guy has to be one of us. Iris definitely just sits down into my soul and so does Name and Slide. In fact I was thinking about what else fit me yesterday after I posted this and and it’s them— him. The guy who is the band while the others play tambourine basically. Lol.
