Hi folks,

I was sad yesterday and this morning. Now this evening I came across this Groklaw legal site shuts over fears of NSA email snooping | Technology | theguardian.com linking to this.

Groklaw - Forced Exposure ~pj

Before I had bookmarked the site but paid it not much attention, always had the opinion it just being a drop on a hot stone.

But after reading the last post on groklaw I was very sad. I actually started crying.

I grew up in eastern germany (10 years) where the Stasi was also eavesdropping on everything. That was before the internet though. So I grew up in a society where big brother was watching and everybody knew it.

Since then I never quite shook that feeling of having to watch whatever I do, it could be misinterpreted by somebody watching.

I'm not sure if that is just general paranoia or part of being an INFJ too.

What I found sad about the groklaw post is that she just gave up because her idealism was crushed. She wrote she can't work in this kind of climate anymore.

After reading the post and the guardians reporting on it and what went on in the UK with the government telling reporters to destroy data, I also realized how silly it all is.

We all just do what we must because we can. It's as simple as this. Still I wish it wasn't. - in an Ideal world.

If you have read this far thanks. Just wanted to vent.

but didn't we all know that everything is monitored since the very beginning of internet being accessible to everyone? it has nothing to do with paranoia, just common sense, imo.

why do you mention premonition? did you sense that the side would shut down or sth?

No not directly. However I had in the past hunches the night before, how my day at work would go, I.e if there would be any surprises. And even though I don't know what it was gonna be I knew once it happened. The negative ones of course are more memorable. Don't recall any positive "premonitions" apart from wishful thinking. With this it was pretty strong. And I'm not sure if it was just a coincidental mood swing and I was just open to being sad, or if it really was a correlation between me being down and sad the day before but blaming other things for it and then me reading the news the day after and feeling really sad. I guess my question would be can anyone relate?

I am not familiar with the particular site you are referring to, but I can sympathize with the beliefs that the author seems to have had. The thing about it, the reality, is that we ARE living in an age where we can never be 100% certain how much information the government has about us, or how they are going to use it. I don't see this as being paranoid, but rather, being mindful of the times in which we live.

Keep in mind that it's not the whole world doing this gestapo-type shit, so far it's just the US and UK in the western hemisphere, two sides of the same coin
