Share your love for the "Firefly" TV series and its follow-up movie "Serenity"!

I love Firefly. It's got themes of outer space, space cowboys, sci-fi, good guy vs. bad guy, dynamic human relationships, romance, awesome character development, hilarious plot twists, funny writing, zombies in space, complicated characters with very basic motivations that anyone can relate to, punchlines that you would never expect, character revelations that make it all worth while...

It's a unique show because this kinda thing had never been done before- and, Joss Whedon simply knows how to write and produce great stuff.

If you love it too, tell us just what you love about it! Here are some ideas...

Who is your favorite character and/or what do you love about one or more of them?

Which relationship between two or more characters do you find the most interesting or entertaining?

What was your initial reaction to the show and when/where/why did you end up watching an episode or the whole series?

Which episode or episodes do you especially enjoy the most?

What do you think of the movie (try not to use SPOILERS in case people are reading who haven't seen it)?

Please share any other thoughts, comments, YouTube vids related to the show or movie that you enjoy which you'd like to share, etc, to show your affection for Firefly.

the parts beginning at 4:13 and 5:53 and 7:29 are my favorites, 8:21 is good too.

What can I say I love the show. I make sure I show it to all my girlfriends so that they feel bad about it being canceled too. I wish there could be a new show every day but alas it will never be, Joss Wedon is a genious and I loved Dr. Horrible's Sing a long Blog too.

I have seen serenity and I loved it! I liked the humour and story line. I didn't know it was based on a TV series. I may watch it but I am just recovering from finding out terminator the sara connor chronicles was cancelled after series 2 so not sure I could handle another let down. If you haven't seen the series I am not saying it's fantastic but not bad in my book. I loved the last terminator movie but may be due to having 2 good looking men on screen. And why is there no follow up to Unbreakable??????? I was sure there would be a sequel. Have you seen Push???? Another one I like and not been talked about much in the UK. Seems to be a severe lack of decent sci-fi and 'end of the world" movies out just now  I'm sure much more could have been done with "I am Legend"... great concept but as always I wanted more.

Yes, I watched some of the Sarah Conner Chronicles with my brother when he had a copy of the pilot episode. We were happy it got picked up and produced into a network TV show. For some reason, I couldn't enjoy it like my brother did, despite that Summer Glau is of course in it and despite the fact that I love the Terminator franchise. It's always a depressing and frustrating thing when a good show is canceled or, in Firefly's case, I believe a GREAT show; I liked Journeyman A LOT and was quite fond of the Joan of Arcadia series, but they both got canceled- Journeyman after a dozen or so episodes, JoA after 2 full seasons. I am still waiting to find Journeyman released to DVD...

I still recommend watching Firefly because, yes it is only 14 episodes, but- those 14 episodes are so heart-warming, funny, and true to the nature of the human heart in adversity that I feel they can only enrich the viewer with a very inspiring feeling. It is sad that the series isn't still going, but it is great that more people are being introduced to Firefly. I saw the movie before the TV episodes on DVD, realizing I would have enjoyed the movie so much more if that order had been switched, but it was still such a great movie. The TV series at least lets you see these characters more often in cheerful and quirky situations than they are afforded in the "Serenity" motion picture. I loved the characters so much, even knowing I was watching a show that got canceled and would inevitably end, I simply couldn't stop myself from watching and enjoying them all. At the end of the viewing I was left with a very happy and fulfilled feeling, especially after watching all of the bonus material of the cast/crew on the DVD.

Lets just say, I would like to execute Fox higher ups every time I watch it. RIP Firefly, the best series that ever got canceled.
I've certainly wished that -had at least a few of them shared our sensibilities- they would have realized this show was gold without even having to discuss the possibility of cancellation, and wouldn't have toyed with the order they aired the episodes in, would have more aggressively marketed the show -both on TV and on the internet- and we'd all be happy campers today. I don't watch the Fox network much as it is, but, they need to at least admit that they contributed to the show's ratings with their bad decisions and further hurt its potential by canceling it. Joss Whedon is always a safe bet, a sure money maker for them, so I can't believe they were doubting him the whole time!

Whoops! I didn't follow my own advice by sharing. Here we go, then!

What was your initial reaction to the show and when/where/why did you end up watching an episode or the whole series?
Before even seeing it, my reaction was, "Not again, bro? Another show you want me to try? I wasn't too crazy about Angel and less so about Buffy, so what's so special about this?" (my brother wanted me to watch it, so he would talk about it, but I take time to come around, so didn't watch it). A bit later when the movie "Serenity" came out, I watched it in the theater with my husband and immediately realized how stupid I was to not let my brother talk me into watching the TV episodes. So, we watched them together! I gradually became more and more at ease with the settings and was very cozily warmed up to the dialogue and loved meeting new characters as they arrived on the scene. Everything that was cheesy about it was cheesy in such a lovable way that I immediately embraced it. This show was different, and I love different- especially when it's that good kind of different which I can't resist.

Which episode or episodes do you especially enjoy the most?
I really like the episode where our "Dear Mrs." returns to cause more mischief, but ooooh she does not realize who SHE is messing with, this time around! Heh hehehehe!

What do you think of the movie (try not to use SPOILERS in case people are reading who haven't seen it)?
I was not expecting it to take the dark direction that it did. That upset me- not that I mind being upset, it was just, wow, this is not where I thought the characters would end up. It was so well written and edited from start to finish, and the journey of the antagonist was also not what I thought it would be, that being a more pleasant sort of surprise. Great emotional work done with the script and of course all the original actors from the show got to express their characters beautifully and to an admirable depth of heart. I was mostly just happy that something original, albeit potentially funky in the eyes of mainstream movie-goers, was getting its screen time up there for all to see and taste; That felt like victory, to me, although bittersweet.

Who is your favorite character and/or what do you love about one or more of them?
I love Jayne for his directness. He follows his gut and says how he feels. He does what he wants and will face a threat with vigor. He is funny, especially when he has emotional moments that let his tough guy exterior melt off.

Zoey is the very essence of trusting loyalty and support, but she knows how to sniff out danger. She will do whatever necessary to protect her captain and complete a mission, and her morals are clear to her so she won't waste time questioning what to do or how to react- she will always do the right thing and do it when it must be done. She shows a lot of respect and restraint, but can step up to extend that respect in telling others what she thinks they've done wrong and why instead of keeping silent.

Which relationship between two or more characters do you find the most interesting or entertaining?
I enjoy the friendship between Mal and Kaylee because she offsets his stern, rigid, somber lead with a more warming glow of sweet, upbeat, tender kinship. Those two actors are actually very good friends because of Firefly.

I also enjoy watching the relationship between Inara and Mal, because it is such a delicate balance of love and also protectiveness which comes off as disdain. Some fans call it a love/hate relationship, but hate is a strong word. You can tell that they do not hate each other, but they are wary of the other because they care so much but will not compromise who they are nor their opinions just to please the other person. Mal and Inara are both very strong-willed and so they will conflict, but as I said, they have come to deeply care for each other and are not ignorant to this- but it is difficult for them to come to terms with, considering the circumstances.

Who is your favorite character and/or what do you love about one or more of them?
I always found Captain Mal hugely entertaining. Nathan Fillion brings more than was on the page, I suspect, but he's a well written and complex character. I like how his decisions seem to be predicated on what will make things most difficult for him, even though he always says he's just in it for money.

Jayne is also hilarious. He's an ID monster, but done really well. What I like, though, is even he gets another side to him at times. No character in the show is simply "The angry one" "The smart one" or whatever. They are all rounded, which makes them compellingly watchable.

Which relationship between two or more characters do you find the most interesting or entertaining?
I liked the antagonism between Jayne and Simon quite a bit. I really liked Kayleigh's pining for Simon as well. Also the way the relationship between Book and Mal developed; Mal was so keen to write book off due to his religion, but ended up finding him worthwhile.

What was your initial reaction to the show and when/where/why did you end up watching an episode or the whole series?
I actually saw the film first, and thought it was ok. Having not seen the show I could follow the plot, but not pick up on the nuances. I was then given the show on DVD, and it took me maybe an episode or two to get into it, but then I was hooked.

Which episode or episodes do you especially enjoy the most?
I really liked the final episode, with the Bounty Hunter (Early?). Really nicely structured. Also Jaynetown was brilliant.

What do you think of the movie (try not to use SPOILERS in case people are reading who haven't seen it)?
I think it was pretty much of a standard with the TV show, so excellent. It rounded the show off nicely in some ways, but also left a lot of unanswered questions (though I believe some of those come up in the Firefly comics).

I really enjoyed the series, and the movie was a great finish to it. They created the movie after the series was canceled, which is really rare for them to do, but the series developed such a following after it was canceled they agreed to make the movie. I thought the way summer glau played her character was great, that silent crazy was what made me enjoy it so much. I am glad to find some fans of the series.

LOVE this series! Taking me to see "Serenity" was my (ex)husband's birthday gift to me. He scored big brownie points on that one! I love Mal's absolute loyalty to his crew, his willingness to do whatever needed to ensure their well-being, and yet, still afraid to commit his heart.

I loved that programme! Such a shame that it was cancelled.
My favourite character was Mal, though Jayne was great too. I just loved Mal's whole attitude to everything. Parts like the flashback in "The Message" where Mal demonstrates a "different school of thought" were just hilarious.

I am kind of a Joss Whedon whore... I love Firefly! I actually say Serenity before I saw the series. I was hardly allowed to watch any television growing up except the discovery channel so Joss Whedon and all his brilliance is a new discovery for me. :blushed:

I love Kaylee. I think she is entirely adorable and I want her.

I just ordered the blu-ray discs from Amazon since my GF and I were re-watching the DVD rips (I own the discs) and she said ".. why don't we have these on blu-ray?" "I dunno." I replied and they were ordered shortly after. ;)

I also will point out the Serenity RPG that's out from Margaret Weis games -- you can get them from DriveThruRPG here (no affiliate link, just a link to the main book). It's $10 for the PDF right now, they cut the prices because Margaret Weis games loses the license at the end of January 2011 (according to the official forums). So get them fast.

You can get the entire set as PDF for under $40, which is less than the price for just the main book (which is adequate, but you really want the Big Damn Heroes book to update the ruleset).

I'll admit that this isn't my favorite game system, but it's not a bad one and can replicate that Firefly feel better than some other licensed games I've read or played.

I really, really want to get a coat of a browish colour. I might have to wait for it to be on sale. :(
