Skin problems/Acne!!!

Fellow feelers, please offer up your words of wisdom! I have an ENFJ guy friend who had chronic acne on his cheeks while waiting to hear back from medical schools. I thought it must have been just his biological makeup, and never expected that MY SKIN WOULD RESPOND THE SAME WAY! The stress of the waiting game is killing me. I've never had cheek acne in my life (I'm 26 btw).

Is there possibly a correlation between stress and break outs for NFs? Is there anything you can do to relax and lessen this horrible physiological stress response? How did you fix your acne? I'm trying every possible remedy - creams, a healthier diet, birth control... is there anything you ladies (or men) did that helped your skin? It's already started to scar a bit. Thank you, thank you, thank you in advance!

Stress causes acne and acne causes stress...

Stressing about it is not going to help, only make it worse. Also stress causes other problems too, so the only solution is to find ways to make yourself happy so that stress does not take over. You think "I'm stressed", then you will be stressed. If you think "I'm allowed to be happy", then you need to take it easy. No matter what you're doing in your life, you have to find ways of making it fun so that it doesn't stress you out.

Any time you do something "stressful" just think "I'm doing my best and it's all I can do". Give yourself time for fun things as well so you keep your life balanced, and if it's people that are stressing you, needing too much attention (usually my case), just tell them you are trying to focus on what you're doing and you will get back to them when you have more free time.

Ah, gotcha. There's definitely a mind body connection that affects our health. Thank you for the reminder! :)
You've inspired me to get back to making green smoothies. I just get stock of cleaning the damn blender, lol! But hey, if it worked for you, I'll see if it won't work for me too, in conjunction with the Paleo diet.

Jusy ordered 5 lbs of cashews to make nondairy milk for smoothies. Thanks for the inspiration, @Superfluous!
Cashews into milk? Omg, I have to look into that, that sounds great! I use coconut milk, I'm so addicted haha.
Blender cleaner is such a drag I knowww lol
I've had acne for 10 years now and it's a little (insert ANY expletive).

DO NOT use citrus (lemon or whatever) on your skin. It will screw up your skin so badly.

Reddit's Skincare Addiction subreddit is absolutely beautiful. I can't insert links in since I'm new. Just google it. It also addresses some myths about acne skincare, such as using lemon on skin and what exactly causes it.

Also, do not assume that: acne --> oily skin. Dry skin can also have acne. You might actually have dehydrated skin (there's a manual in the subreddit). A lot of people with acne tend to over dry their skin by using really harsh products and that actually makes their skin freak out and cause even more acne. People also assume that you have to wash your face twice a day, but you don't. Just wash it at night unless you're feeling really grimy in the mornings.

I have dry and sensitive skin (I was also one of the people who thought I had oily skin, but nope). I'm breaking out at the moment but that's because I came off birth control since my cycle finally re-regulated itself. It'll take 2-3 months for it to go back to normal. (Oh, birth control can also be used for acne medication for females. Ask your doctor).

I'm currently using:

Morning
1. Just moisturizer: Neutrogena Ulta Gentle Sensitive Skin Moisturizer

Night:
1. Cetaphil Daily Cleanser (I'm probably going to switch it out for something else though. Just get a plain cleanser that doesn't have any acne medication in it like salicylic acid/benzoyl peroxide since it won't be much use since active acne fighting medicine actually have to stay on your skin instead of just being washed off).
2. AmLactin 12% Lactic Acid Lotion (I'm trying out an AHA for exfoliating for once. This is a moisturizer and exfoliator wrapped up in one product. Also, it's great for keratosis pilaris/chicken skin).

Speaking of exfoliation, washing with washclothes is physical exfoliation and should be limited to 1x/week. If you have a clairisonic and anything like that, limit the use. Switch to a chemical exfoliator.

*Everything bought at WalMart.

It's a verrrrrrry simplified routine for me right now. Mainly because I'm lazy. That, and I'm trying to keep my skin as possible while my hormones freak out. Once the 2-3 months are up, I'll add in a mask and spot treatment. I'll most likely just use a cream cleanser as a mask (Neutrogena Deep Clean Cream Cleanser) and a salicylic acid based astringent using cotton swabs as a spot treatment (Clinique Acne Solutions 3-Step Clarifying Lotion).

Also, PATCH TEST for any skincare product you buy. Test the products for at least 3 days to see if your skin reacts to any products. Also, don't replace your entire routine at once or else it's gonna be a pain to figure out what's causing a new breakout or whatever.

Get some sleep.

Drink more water.

Get vitamin D/supplements are fine.

Don't procrastinate. Stress is bad. Procrastination definitely causes stress and bad sleeping habits.
