Is it just me, or do think it's sad how obsessed people are over social media? I see people around me all the time on Snapchat and Instagram, and they seem to be obsessive about it. I wish people would put more value in interpersonal interactions instead of the pictures they post. I myself am trying to be less addicted to social media, and I've started to notice how addicted people are to social media and their phones.

Social medias are good in finding and keeping friends but it sometimes can lead to the destruction of good relationships and make people withdraw from face to face interaction. Obsessive people more likely to reach the bad side of it.

I think there is some good to the advancement of technology, especially because of how expectations are on kids: you almost have to do clubs, sports, go to all the events you can, do outside of school activities just to be competitive enough for college and the future thus iphones, laptops, ipads, etc provide easy on the go access to friends, information, interactions, games... Plus, there has been a increasing individually instead of community, leading to more presumed dangers as more people are strangers with the people who live around them, thus kids can't just go out and play without some adult supervision.

However, I understand how annoyed one can be when the person you're trying to have dinner with, or hangout with, maybe you're just in class and everyone is on their phone... the emphasis on individually and independence can be shown how to do it wrong in some cases like these.

This site is my social media :p

But I get what you mean. Really the concept in of themselves isn't bad, I've met some really cool characters on here (I also get to see the crummy ones too :p) I wonder what exactly is the difference between facebook/twitter/tumbler/instagram/others compared to this site.

I personally have never owned a smartphone, only a tablet (and my cat broke that). So I've never got into those types of things. Frankly from an outside perspective I don't see much use for them. Sure it's nice to keep in touch with family and friends and talk every once in awhile, but I don't need to know what they're doing 24/7.

But like I said, I can't give a fair judgement as I've never used them.

Some social medias such as facebook, twitter, instagram makes people feel uncomfortable. These sites has the power to impact our mood and the stress associated with the site can also impact your mental health and self-esteem. Heavy usage of these sites can lead to a new type of disorder called Social media Anxiety Disorder (SMAD). But sites like YouTube, Pintrest, LinkedIn produced little to no anxiety.

Yeah.. Most of the kids in my school are addicted to social media, and the girls have a snapchat and they take selfies with the snapchat filters in the bathroom, hallway, at lunch, and pretty much anywhere. My teacher says phones should be put away and they're only allowed at lunch time but they just get away with it when the teacher isn't looking..

I've never used social media. I don't understand this addiction to sharing all your life. It seems that all that matters now is pretending to have a perfect life. This obsession with 'likes'... is a disease.

Try committing social media suicide (disappear off it) and observe people's utter disbelief - the degree of their obsession.

You are using social media if you are using this forum. Some people disagree, but I think that this forum, is a place where you can be social and media means a mass communication or a medium, and this forum is both. Therefore I think it is a form of social media.

However, others disagree, and they think that, forums do not have the negative connotations of social media, therefore it is not a form of social media.

Although you can look at it both ways, either through a dictionary definition, or thorough connotations. You could argue that the dictionary definition is fact. But it is not about that. It is about people's subjective opinion on the phrase mass communication - personally I think that this forum has mass communication, but what is mass communication to others?

I agree, but as you said, I think forums do not have the negative connotations of social media, if you use them properly you can have deep and meaningful discussions, without the need of sharing your private life, and without the obssesion for likes and followers.
Anyway, I know people who use social media (twitter, etc) properly, without being addicted all day, and that's great because I think social media can be a good thing if you know how to make good use of it.:proud:

In my school you are allowed to charge your phone and have it out at lunch. I always see people on social media while doing their work. I honestly wonder how they even manage to stay focused.

I do think social media has it's pros and cons. The pros are more that it's given us a chance to connect with people all over the world in terms of culture, beliefs, etc. The cons are more related to huge superficiality and insecurities as well as the fact that social media has given people platform to say all kinds of ignorant things that they wouldn't dare say in real life.
