I'm starting to realize how cool and collected my parents actually were when I was growing up. Maybe I'm just too use to my relatively "new" teenager not needing me as much...at least that is, until he really needs me. Relentless I tell you. I don't think I was ever that way but I'm pretty sure I've blanked out everything in my memory having to do with me being anything but an angel.
Ask a child to hold off until you get home from work seems like a simple request...right? One foot in the door and *BAM*POW* "Mom - I need this, can I do this, you need to make this, I want this..." blah blah blah. Excuse me? Mom has a splitting headache and lots of things going on tonight - including making you dinner (it turned out to be frozen pizza due to lack of time). Let me remind you, as an INFJ, I'm a planner and can become very easily overwhelmed. And I was.
In the end, all turned out well. I didn't get to bake the cookies I intended to make for work today. We were able to come up with a German dish-to-pass for his foreign language class - also sprung on me last night *SURPRISE!* I was able to squeeze in the delivery of some ground meat I had ordered. My son ran quickly to the local market a couple blocks from the house and purchased the remainder of ingredients needed not only for the German Potato Salad...but also the cookies (I'll make them tonight). In the meantime, I put away the clean dishes from the dishwasher...and got him set up to make the dish-to-pass and popped the pizza in the oven. We managed to eat, fill up the dishwasher for a new load, homework AND (he surprised me with this one) he did a load of his own laundry. I'll repeat that..........HE DID A LOAD OF HIS OWN LAUNDRY WITH A COUPLE OF MY ITEMS ADDED TO IT! Stunned...but proud mom...then took some tums and a migraine pill all while heading towards the much deserved couch! Yay!
As crazy as life gets sometimes - it's all worth it. Especially when the kiddo says to me this morning, "Uggg, mom, do you think these pants will loosen up after a while? I washed them and they are soooooo tight now!" I laugh a bit and tell him they will stretch out...and silently it comes to me, oh, I wonder if he shrank mine too! Good thing I love that kid!
