@Ink totally confused the issue by saying last SO "was/is" ....

I'm guessing he meant to include everyone who's in a relationship as well as those who are not. So those in a relationship are supposed to pick the one they're in a relationship with now, and those who aren't in a relationship are supposed to pick the type of their last SO.

That's my best guess.
