Hello,

This is my first post here (I also posted this on another forum, but I want to be sure), I made it because I'm curious to find out what type two of my roommates would fall under. Unlike my other roommates they are rather hard to type, I think mainly because the are introverted, I think that in some way they have similar personalities, but not quite. Anyway I'll make up a list of traits they have.

Roommate 1

- So again, definitely an introvert
- Knows a lot about history even though it's not his field of study. Seems obsessed with movies too and just has a lot of interests in general.
- He looks a bit slow, and always behaves passive, won't initiate much.
- Likes to do things on his own accord, he tends only to himself mostly, but I also feel like he enjoys being social at times.
- I think he is one of those smart but lazy guys and so doesn't always do well in school.
- He is extremely punctual.
- Has this really dry wit.
- Doesn't talk much.

With him I struggle the most trying to find out if he is a feeler or not, I think he is very sensitive, but can't express his emotions too well. So for now I have filled in IXXP, forgot to mention he makes music and plays various instruments, all self-taught, and was thinking maybe ISFP?

Roommate 2

- Again, an introvert, but his social life is more out there (he's a boy scout, is part of a fraternity), I think he can only socialise or hold a conversation with people who are either really extraverted or share his interests. The first roommate is slightly better at small talk
- Might also be one to tend more to himself, and is also a bit passive in a way. Like the first roommates, he'll never initiate to arrange an activity for the members of our student residence.
- I also think of him as extremely smart, he has a master in physics and now just like the first one is majoring in philosophy.
- He likes to build stuff for his computer, is quite handy I think, and also has unexpected hobbies, like he rides a motorcycle, not in a million years would I have thought that this guy rides a motorcycle.
- This also makes him funny, because he can be so unpredictable.
- Oh, and he likes to show and talk about the stuff he builds.

I kind of thought of him as either an ISTP or an INTP.

What do you guys think?

I think your first roommate sounds like an INTP or an INFP.

Your second roommate sounds like he may be an ISTP.

Thanks for replying! INFP seems likely for him, I only find it hard to understand Fi in general. As for the second, I also landed on ISTP for that one! I would love to gain more insights into these two, there are similar in a way yet so different. I've lived with the first roommate for 4 years now, and he is still a mystery to me.

I wanted to add a question, ISFP and INFP are both Fi dominant types. INTP has Fe in its stack. How would you say, will these three react when they, for example, where in the company of someone who is sad and needs some comforting?

No problem! Fi could be pretty accurate for him based on your description. A fi-user's values come from within themselves. They need a lot of time and mental solitude when making a decision. They determine their own moral code and go by this. With Ne, an INXP will think in the "what if" in a way that involves multiple ideas simultaneously. I can't rule out Ti completely though. INTP would be my second option but I would go with INFP over INTP.

Yeah, ISTP could potentially work. The fact that he can mostly socialize with people who hold his interests sounds like it could be a se-ti thing. I've seen other ISTxs who are more social than you would think but seem to have that quality. The fact that he's very mechanical can go with this typing as well.

That is an interesting question. It would probably depend on the individual but I might guess that the ISFP and the INFP might try to comfort the person and the INTP might do it in their own way. The ISFP might be the first to notice that the person was sad out of the three of them. The way the INTP would try may be different than the other two.

The ISFP might try to lighten the mood and focus on the person's more current problem while the INFP might dig deeper. The INFP would try to show the person that they are not alone. The two of them might relate the situation to their own experiences. The two of them would work together. For the INTP, it might depend on how well they know the person. The INTP may try to approach it in a more logical fact-based way but would still try to find connections. They might try to lighten the mood with humor when the time was right.
