Hey fellas,

I was just thinking about this issue. What could be the ultimate objective of our lives? Where do we see ourselves, say 20 years down the line? What really drives us and give the satisfaction that we are looking for in the world? Is it money or power or fame or sex or relationships or I don't know?

For me, its gotta be money. I mean, all the other things mentioned above are required as well (except relationships, they freak me), but I guess its money which will gimme the most satisfaction. So, yeah!, 20 years down the line, I wanna be a billionaire!

For me my concrete goals change. It's all about the journey sometimes for me: fulfilling my curiosities and taking on new challenges as they come up. If I become a billionaire in the process then that's fine, and it's fine to have that as a motivation, but at heart I'm an adventurer and like the idea of being an innovator. So my ultimate goal would be to expose and utilize my creativity to the utmost in any venture I take on not having any regrets. Fuck knows where that takes me.

Money's a secondary goal.

I seek happiness in whatever form it may come. I'd like a fullfilling relationship, successful career and lot's of freedom to do what i want. So money and free time will be important.

In 20 years, I'll be 62. I think I'd be happy with a decent retirement and having my debt paid down enough so that I don't have to bust my ass to keep up with it.

Likewise. I'm a bit closer. I have done the successful career and fulfilled relationship and been blessed with a couple of great kids. I have 6 more years til I am financially and occupationally free, and then I want to spend years thinking, enjoying the turning of the seasons, performing and having good times with good friends.

Maximum enjoyment... travel, adventure, and the financial freedom to pursue whatever I like... sitting on a beach or taking a trip in Virgin Galaxy into outer space. I will have the most awesome partner in crime to take along. Money is important but it is the experiences which last the lifetime. Power? Bahhh...

Build a god damn spaceship with highly destructive weapons, or just create something and patent it and earn money for doing nothing.

Have an positive impact on any scale possible, the bigger the better in the world. So I say out loud, "My work here is done" just before my death. Glory is secondary, money is not far behind, and since nothing seams to shake my mood, I'll be happy no matter what appens.

Eudaimonia - a word the ancient greek philosophers used. It meant something along the lines of happiness with accomplishment, in accordance with virtue and reason.

But I suppose the above idea isn't difficult to come by, the real question is what makes you happy, what will make you happy going forward, and what do you want to accomplish and will accomplishing those things or progressing towards accomplishment make you happy. For me it's family, friends, constantly learning new things and feeding my curiosity, debating, furthering my career, progressing towards my career ambitions, beating the competition and a whole host of other things. And wenches! Making us happy and miserable, often at the same time.

It makes sense to think about this and identify the motivation in one's life and then plan the rest of your time towards that. For me, too, those motivations change. Intellectual satisfaction, maybe. Comfort, maybe. I think it's probably conversation that I value most.

@EmpireConquered, how does spiritual enlightenment look for you?

First what comes in my mind reading this is some spiritual enlightment in budhist style and/or transcendence, but you probably mean something else.

I'm not really sure, maybe- like a state of full knowledge? Where I'm no longer ignorant of anything, and are emotionally and physically balanced. Problem is, I haven't reached it yet, so no concrete vision yet. lol.
