Let me know what you think of this idea...

There are lots of people who love to travel and want to go travel, but it can be very expensive. But what if you could rent your home out while you are gone so you don't have to pay for a vacation and the price of your house sitting idle. This could even be done like a house swap where person X wants to vacation where person Y lives, and person Y wants to vacation where person X lives. So instead of paying for an expensive hotel or renting an expensive summer house, person X pays the cost of living in person Y's home (electricity, monthly payments on house) and person Y pays the cost of living in person Y's home, for either a week, month, or longer. Therefore people can travel to many more places for longer and for less money.

Is this like couch surfing?
It sounds like a great idea.
If I owned a house, I would go for it.

I think the advantage of using a couch surfing service is that they may check out the people somewhat. Correct me if I'm wrong because I have not used one. I guess - in my old age of being over 50 - I would like to know the people in my home had not committed awful crimes, had reasonable credit, etc. I guess I'd want to call my insurance company to see if damages would be covered too. Boy, do I sound like an old lady. :)

Anyway, I really do like the idea. Trade a place to stay for a place to stay. You have to pay overhead on your home anyway, and you can lose the expensive hotel bills. I like creative, cheap travel ideas.

Another idea I saw here was taking freighter cruises. Apparently some freighter lines take passengers. Does anybody know about this?
