If you're interested in a Cognitive Function-based approach, reading the INFP profile on Personality Junkie is a really good place to start.

I would advocate a top-down approach as well, because the functions that are easier to develop are the dominant and auxiliary, and once you have more life experience, the tertiary and inferior. At the same time, you're using all of your functions, including the ones that are shadow in order to function in life, so you could always take a cognitive functions test and see which ones you have good control over and which ones you don't.

Personally, I sing the praises of Ne because it is a natural complement to Fi, absorbing in outside information and theories in order to support and make sure that your dominant judging system fits with the nature of the world in general.

Here's the Personality Junkie profile - INFP Personality Type Profile - Personality Junkie , and here's a great cognitive functions test - Keys 2 Cognition - Cognitive Processes

I hope this helps you in starting. :)
